At the rehearsal of one of Voltaire’s tragedies*
Mr. Cramer, bookseller at Geneva (and the au
thor’s own immediate publisher) was finishing
his part, which was to end with some dying sen
tences; when Voltaire, all despotic over those
lie thinks his dependents, cries out aloud, ‘ Cra
ftier, ‘ you lived like a prince in the four prece
ding acts* but in the fifth you die like a booksel
ler.’ I)r. Tronchin, the Boerhaave of his age,
being present, could no’ help, in “kindness, in.
terfering; adding witliall, ‘ Why, Mons. de Vol
taire, can you expect gentlemen to be at this ex
pence of. dresses, and fatigue of getting such
long parts, if you thus continue to upbraid them?
On tne contrary, 1 think they all deserve the
‘greatest encouragement at your hands; and, as
to my friend Cramer, 1 declare, that, as far as 1
am a judge, he dies with the same dignity he liv
ed.’ Voltaire, who detests advice, or being in
formed by an inferior, (for an author is, in his
eye, beyond even an jF.sculapius.were he living)
made this cool answer • • Pr’ythee, doctor, when
you have got kings to kill, kill them your owu
way; but let me kill mine as 1 please.’
Some time about tbe year 1761, a living in
Caerlnarthenshire, in the gift of Dr. Squire, late
bishop of St. David’s, being vacant, his lordship
received a letter from the earl of B , recom
mending one Mr. L ,in the strongest terms,
to his lordship, and intimating, that, it his lord
ship had not fixed on a person to supply the liv
ing of , lie should he much obliged to him
if he would present his friend Mr. L to it,
and that hi3 lor .ship might command his (the
carl’s) interest for* himself or friends at any time,
&.C. ’ It happened, before the bishop returned
answer to the carl, that a poor curate, miserably
dressed, came to liis house, he being then at Ab
ergavilly, and sent in a letter to his lordship.—
This letter was written by himself to the bishop,
in which he set forth, that he had a wife and five
children; that his income wa9 but , and that
■ therefore they wanted the common necessaries
of life; that he had no friend to recommend him;
but hearing of the goodness of his lordship’s
heart, and his liberal way of thinking and acting,
he was come to petition his lordship for tbe liv
ing of ; lie hoped, at least, that bis lordship
would pardon his presumption; for though the
method of application was uncommon, yet so was
his lordship’s generosity ; and, notwithstanding,
he had no particular claim to his favor by interest
or dependence, he had, however, a genera! claim
to it, as being an honest man; which to his ..lord
ship was no small recommendation. The bishop
ordered him in, gave him a dinner, for he had
Walked upwards of twenty W elch miles, required
• testimonium of his good behaviour, which lie
produced, found him well acquainted with polite
literature, and the mathematics, and, in short,
not only presented him to the living, but gave
him the money to discharge the expence.i of tin
institution. May the memory of this <ction re
main as long as any language can convey ideas
to posterity ! and, as the grateful remembsancc
of Dr. Squire’s goodness is indelibly fixed in the
hearts of the whole family who are made thus
happy, so let the record of this deed stand in the
pane of history, and mav time itself never be able
to eflac it'!
Mr. Prior, whose rhymes in his humorous pie
ces are frequently half words, sent a performance
to the press, with a line that ended with the syl
lable del ,■ t; e printer, Who"was afterwards lord
mayor of London, aud consequently we must
suppose him a plan of some learning, thinking it
stood for the Latin Word dele, leave out, omitted
the syllable and put a stop to the rhyme. Prioi
sent hack tile proof-sheet, atul restored del the
printer, who was well acquainted with dr’e, but
knew not what to make of del, compleated the
line by printing dele'. This blunder entirely
spoiled the rhyme, and made nonsense of the pas
sage. Prior, out of all patience, again blotted
out dele, atul writ in its place dele -with a p*a\ —
and the printer retured the sheet, ending ’he
line by dclo with a p'.v.
In the year 1G95, a Piedmontese, who styled
himself Count Caraffa, came to Vienna, and pri
vately waited on the prime minister, preteod-ng
he was sent bv the Duke of Savoy on a very im
portant affair, which they two were to negotiate
without the privacy of the French court. At t o
came time lie produced his credentials, in which
the duke’s seal and signature were very exactly
imitated. He met with a very favorable recep
tion, and, without alfecting any privacy, took up
on him the title of Envoy extraordinary from the
Court of Savoy. He had several conferences
with the imperial cnuncil, and made so great
a figure in the most distinguished assemblies,
that once at a private concert at court, the cap
tain of the"guard denying him admittance, he de
manded satisfaction in his master’s name, and the
officer was obliged to ask liis pardon. His first
care wns to ingratiate himself with the Jesuits,
who, at that rime, bore a great sifay at court; and
in order to this, lie went to visit their church,
which rermii.fing unfi ished, ac they pretended
from the low circumstances of the society, he
asked them how much would complete it? An
estimate to the amount of two thousand louis
d’ors being laidbefore him, Caraffa assured them
of his constant attachment to their order: that he
had gladly embraced such a public opportunity
of shewing- h s for them, and that they might im
mediately proceed to finishing their church. In
consequence of his promise, lie sent that very
<lay, the two thousand louis-d'ors, at which sum
the charge had been computed. He was very
sensible that this was a,part he could not act long
without being detected; and that this piece of
generosity might not be at his own expence, he
invited a great number of ladies of the first rank
to supper and a ball. Every one of the guests
had promised to be there; but he complained to
tiiem all of the ill returns made to his civilities;
adding, tiiat he had been often disappointed, as
the ladies made no scruple of breaking their
words on such occasions, and, in a jocular way
insisted on a pledge from every lady for their
appearance at the time appointed. One gave
him a ring, another a pearl necklace, a third a
pair of ear-rings, a fourth a gold watch, and sev
oral such trinkets, to the amount of twelve thou
sand dollars. On the evening appointed, not one
of the gusts was missing; but it may easily be
conceived what a damp it struck upon the whole
as embly, when it was at last found that the gay
Piedmontese was a sharper, and had disappeared
--Nor had the Jesuits any great reason to ap
plaud themselves on the success of their dissimu
lation; for a few days before his departure, the
pretended count putting on an air of deep con
cern, placed himself in the way of the emperor’s
confessor, who enquired into the of his apparent
nithuicholly. He intrusted him with an impor
tant secret, That he was short of money at a junc
ture when eight thousand louis-d’ors were im
mediately wanted for bis master’s affairs, to be
distributed at tne imperial court. The Jesuits,
to whom he had given a recent instance of his
liberality by so large a donation, immediately
furnished him with die sum he wanted, and, with
this acquisition, & the ladies pledges, he thought
he had carried his jests far enough, and very pru
dently withdrew from Vienna.
