From the Charleston Courier.
O! tho". who dwelt in loftiness.
Ere man had learn’dto fall;
Ere pcrt’ry drank in bitterness.
Its wormwood and ifs gall;
Tire wealth had rear’d its golden piles*
Where nafiot : bow the knee ;
’ But health, all radiant o’er with smiles,
Made man unbent and free.
Thou Spirit! who pervad’st the wild
And desert wilderness;
Bu,t in thy wrath hast nevet 1 smil’d,
Where croucffing thousands press;
Who, thro’ the danger and the dread,
The high-soul’d hero bore, ‘
Unshook by fear, by glory led,
Thro’ battle’s deepest roar.
O ! thou wilt never come and dwelt,
Where men in cities throng;
Where heartless pimps, in triumph swell,
To poiv’r ?. pian song ;
Thou shut ’s die base and crawling herd;
The desart is thy home;
And with the pinions of a bird,
Thou only there wilt roam.
O, Spirit! take me then with thee,
Where winds of ocean blow ;
Till life, replete with extacy,
To inspiration glow;
G! let me wander freely there,
Till death my being sever ;
Then thro’ the brightest fields of air,
A Spirit, float forever.
Voluminous Book. —The following anecdote
will show, that “a great hook is a great evil,”
when the sub ject of it is obnoxious to j>ower
In Russia a quarto volume was publish : 1 in fa
vor of the liberties of the people, m w: cli the 1
conduct of the Sovereign was censur-.d pretty J
freely. Such a book in such a countr; naturally j
created a sensation ; the author was ttueii into 1
custody, his production determined to he a libel,
and himself condemned to cat bis own words.—!
This sentence was actually carried into execu
tion, and in the following manner: a scaffold was
erected in one of the most public streets of the
city, where the provost, the magistrates, and the
physician and surgeon of the Czar attended.—
The book was separated from its binding, the
margins cut off, and was then served up (mutton
chop fashion) bv ‘he provost,leaf by leaf and :he
unfortunate author had no alternative between
eating this dish, with the accompaniment of an
indigestion, or leaving it to that exquisite re
finement, the knout. In this manner, after three
very hearty, tho’ by no means savour repasts,
the unfortunate scribe consumed the offspring
of bis own brain; contained in a thick quarto vol
ume.
An -When t e Chisadersi
Under King Itffeliant of England, defeated the 1
Saracens, the Sultan seeing his troops fly, asked
what was the number of the Christians who were
snaking all this slaughter? He was'told that it
was oitly King Richard and his men, and that
they were all on foot. “Then,” said the Sultan,
“God forbid that such a noble fellow as King Ri
chard should march on foot;” and sen* him a no
ble charger. The messenger took it. ands ..cl,
“hire, the Sultan sends you this chifger, that
you may not be on foot.” The King was as cun
ning us Ids enemy, h ordered one of his squires
to mount the horse in order to try ldin. The
squire obeyed; lot the animal proved fiery; and
the squire being unable to bold him in, he setoff
at full speed to the Sultan’s pavilion. Ihe Sul
tan expected he had got King Richard, and was
net a little mortified to discover his mistake.
IMPORTANT DISCOVERY.
What has been so long and soardentl)’
eought for by ship builders, we believe to be
uow nearly if not wholly attained. W:• al
lude to the discovery otftimber, whicii will
secure a ships bottom against the terrible in
vasion of the worm, so universally destruc
tive.
The discovery was accidentally made by
our lowivftiuaivCapt. Thus. Shields, during
his residence at the Ray ol St. Louis. lie
Pound that a psrtichlai stake, used for. fas
tening a boat, had remained perfectly good
and staunch for a year, whereas others had
hsfiltobe replaced every twoorthree moutns
bci. g destroyed by ihe worm, tin examina
tion this stuk, proved to oe of sweet guen,
a timber usually considered of no value.
Capt. S. deciding to make a full and fair
experinent, fjr -ured a small tree, sweet
guin, hewed it down until it squared nine
inches, and then staked in three feet v.ater,
afftn ding every opportunity to the worm.
This sweet gum stick remained
aed lor four years ; when, on examination,
it was found perfectly free from moss, bar
nacle, and all other excrescence ; and on
hewing it down again an inch or more, no
tr’ v. ;s of the worm were to be seen, except
three or four very small punctures of incon
siderable depth. Capt. Shields communi
cated these facts to Commodore Patterson
some years ago, the commodore declared
his intention of making a further experi
ment in the Lake Rarataria—whether this
was done, or what, was the result we know
not, but we hope the experiment, if made,
was satisfactory, as that at Bay St. Louis.
The Sweet Gum [Liquidambat , Lin’n.—
styracifi ia} i* ty great abundance on the
Alabins* and the Lakes and Rays between
Pen itcela and New-Orleans—it is of pro
digious girth’ and towering taliness—fre
quently exhibiting a smooth stem of fifty
and sixty leet—and remarkably straight.
It can be sawed into plank of almost any
size, hut it will not split,on which account
iti; universally rejected,as useless. t
Is n not worth the experiment ? Cut this
timber into sheathing plank of half inch or
less and try it on some of our Lake Craft.
Its flexibility is such, that a thin plank may
be ueui aud shaped almost as one pleases.
Floridian.
?Vnon the ravages made by the great
flnuds ut water, at the North, is the diatruc
siDu of the o'd Stone Bridge at the entrance
of Trenton, N.J. that had stood almost a
century. This small structure is intimate-
iy connected with American history ■- iff
the glboir.v y“ar of 1777” it formed the de
file that Washington tiefeiuled successfully j
against the Bi ish Annv, under Cornwall-;
is; ou this bridge wasjilso erected a trium
phal arch under which he passed, to meet
the Congress assembled in New-Yoi k, trea
ding ott the strewed fl wers anti greeted
with the song* es his fair country-women.
Thus change and fall the scenes of the
triumphs, ofthnf great man, but his renown
is immortal ; it is interwoven with the
hearts of American and the very names of
heroism and virtue.
PROVIDENCE, FEB. 27.
The high wind on Sunday night treed our
harbor from the ponderous bar of ice oppo
site Pawturet river; and by the active ex
ertions of many of our enterprising citizens
who ‘nave vessels ready for sea—the ob
structions, arising from thed'ift ice, which
had formed a body near Field’s Point were
yesterday removed so as to permit the de
parture of several vessels which had ob
tained Clearances. The air on Monday
night was so intensely cold as to congeal
the water in its rapid current under Wey
tosset bridge, but the rise of the tide yes
terday removed the ice.
From St. Helena.— We learn bv capt.
Jacob Smith, who has arrived at Newport
from St. Helena, that two transports from
the Cape of good Hope, touched there on
the lOthof January, with the former Gover
nor of the Cape, and part of the 7'2 d regi
ment on b:ard, bound to England. An En
glish ve-scl which touched at St. Helena
;on the Bth January, in a short passage from
’ H itavja, reported that it was very sickly at
[that place. Several of the ships had lost
I nearly the whole of their crews. Capt.
