TUESDAY MOJi.YfJYG, April 2, 1822.’
MRS. GILFERT’s BENEFIT
Was postponed in consequence of the bad
.weather, and will take place this evening.
FOH TUB MUSEUM.
Mb. Editor —I am an individual, sir, required
ft) meet my payments in an adjoining state. Now
notes of the banks of this state will not answer
this purpose, because they are below par abroad.
I therefore made a demand at the bank for the
amount of tbee notes, which 1 held in specie.—
Instead of my demand being complied with, or
being treated with that politeness which is due
from one member of the community to wards an
other, I was treated with supercilious contempt.
I will ask, sir, what would have been the con
duct of this bank towards an individual who re- j
fused them payment for his notes when they be- j
came due ? Are not the laws of justice as oaii-;
gatorv on corporations as individuals ? 1 aia a- 1
ware, sir, of the superior iuiluence I have to con
tend with —yet it is the privilege ot the injured.
to complain—and tny voice shall alwuj s be heard
in complaint when that is the only mode of re
dress. ONE OF THE PEOPLE.
To the Pious. —A splendid copy of the Holt) j
Bible will be raj/led jor at the meeting-hous* this
morning—the godly are invited to tako chances.j
[Mem. This looks something like pressing the j
devil into the service of the Loan.]
In Owen’s Travels, Yol. 11. p. 102, the follow- \
jug reason is assigned by the King of Naples for •
tiot putting an end to Assassination in Ins king
dom. “At present, said that Monarch, l lose live
thousand of my subjects, annually, by assassina
tion; if, therefore, I were to put to that h every
assassin, 1 should lose double the number.”
From the -V. T. National Advocate.
IRELAND.
The following “xtract from a Dublin pa
per of the *4th us January, ailh. ils the best
of all evidence, that the accounts propaga
ted of robberies, murders, and other exces
ses in Ireland, are almost altogether with
out foundation:
The Commission. —Yesterday at 2 o’clk.
the itott. Justices Fletcher and Jebh, accom
panied by the Rh lion, the Lord Mayor,
in state, opened the commission in Green
street. The city cavalcade was atteuded
with the usual ceremonies.
Mr. Justice Fletcher, in a short speech,
congrutuiated both juries on the lightness
ol the calenders. The country, it was said,
was in a very agitated state at piesent, but
the list of criminals, about to lit; tried, spoke
jutlicientlv lor tiie loyal and quiet state ol
the metropolis. It was true there were a
iarms—reports of the arrival of thousands
—but he would say again, the present cal
endars gave the Ire to these alarms and re
port*. In Limerick itself, said to be the
scene ol so much disquiet, it appeared from
the result ol a commission, conducted by
the most eminent talents at the Fish bar,
that no conspiracy existed against the law
or religion of the country; but the exaction
of tithes, heavy rents, changes in the cm
rency of the country, and other sudden re-i
volutions, which had not been foreseen byj
wiser men, had made the wrefened and ig-i
norant peasantry Ilyin the face of the laws]
oftheLnd. Thetiocfurnal visit# they had
made were confined to no particular class
—they had insulted no party—they had
made no distinctions in the objects of their
depredations.
The special commission had done much
‘good, and every tiling which had been ex
pected from it, he believed, would be • euii
xed.

OGDENSBURG, March -4.
An alarming attempt to ussassinate. —On
Thursday last, an anonymous letter was
] left on the piaz/.a of Judge Ford’s house,

Yesterday, after the Pratt* had conclu

; ness
Mr. I{. M. Johnson, of Ky. rose and sta
ted t hat official duties had obliged him to
j traasact >ome business at the public offi
ces, and iie wa very much surprised to fiuil
that the bill granting to George Shan
inoii a section of land, had been taken up in
[his absence and indefinitely postponed,
I contrary to the usual course and courtesy
lot this body, without giving an opportuni
ty to the membet who introduced the pro
position to vindicate its merits. He had
I beeti charged with the memorial of Mr.
.Shannon, who was a distinguished citizen
of Keun. who li id performed distinguished j
services to Ins country, and now asked foi l
a just'eward for the personal sacrifices
which he had made, and ttie suttei wigs’
which he had endured, for his countiy. —;
Mr J. said that Mr. Shannon had served!
the respectable county of Fayette seveial!
years in the Legislature of Kentucky—[
that, for his age, lie was a promising and a
distinguished individual, and he could riot
reconcile it to his feelings that the bill for
his relief should be disposed of while he
had been attending to official duties else
where—that Mr. .Shannon was a high-min
ded honorable man, and had been urged,
by his friends, to presell’ to the national le
gislature bis just claims for consideration
—diat, independent of his sacrifices ami
sufferings, his liberal disposition, and his
patriotic devotion to his country, hud kept
him in indigent circumstances with a large
growing family to provide for. Mr. John
son Roped, under tliese circumstances, tiial
the Senate would reconsider the question,
and place it statu quo, that he might, o.i a
proper occasion, present his views to the
Senate.
The vote was taken on re-consideration,
ami carried, and the bill was then laid on
the table.
Several bills were read a second time
and referred to committees.
The Senate then, according to the order
of the day, took up the bill to continue iti
force an act declaring the assent of Con
gress to acts of the State of South-Carolina,
authorizing the City Council of Charleston
to impose a djty on the tonnage of vessels
from foreign purts: ami to acts of the State
of Georgia authorizing a like imposition in
tae ports of Savannah and St. Mary’s; and,
after undergoing some amendment,
The. bill was ordered to be engrossed and
read a third time.
The Senate again went into the conside
ration of Executive business, and so conti
nued until past 3 o’clock; and then
Adjourned till Monday.
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
The House resumed the consideration of
the unfinished business of yesterday, (the
rbiii tn&uthoriae tit* eseftange os’ ikrtgia
stocks.)
After adopting some further amendments,
the discussion of which, as well as of other
j propositions, among which wuh the recon
[sideration and rejection of Mr. Camber
leog’s amendment, adopted yesterday.
The question was taken on ordering the
bill (;> oe engrossed and read a third time, I
and was negatived .by a voteof 65 to 61.
No the bill wa rejected; and
The House adjourned.
