THE MUSEUM,
From the Baltimore Morning Chronicle.
Mr. Editor—The following lines will be perus
ed with peculiar interest by those of our readers,
who admire the beautiful simplicity of Mont
gomery’s address u To a Wild Flower.” To
such it will perhaps, be gratifying to know, that
they are the production of a lady, whose many
amiable and splendid talents, will long bloom in
the affections of her admiring friend- 1 , an unfad
ing Forget-me-not.
A FLOWER.
There is a flower, a little flower,
With azure crest and goldcp eye,
Whose smiles illume the vernil hour,
Whose tints reflect the sky—
Tell me its name?
The gayer beauties of the field,
With rain-bow coloured glories bright,
Their charm to every sun-beam yield,
And on the admiring sight
Obstrusive glare.
But this small flower to friendship dear,
Beneath the white-thorn’s humble shade;
And the village haunts shall rear
Its unassuming head
Uncultur’d grow.
To bless his steps, who cheerless treads,
Unconsciously the w* ads among;
While busy ntem'ry fondly lead*
To pleasure vanish’d long, -
And absent love.
The feeling 1 heart shall seek the hower
Its early bloom was svant to cheer;
Shall find the consecrated flower,
To recollection dear,
Affection’s child.
The distant orburied friend,
The soul congenial link’d to thin*;
Again shall at thy side attend
In sweet communion join
Thy pensive walks.
The joy* that wing’d their rapid flight,
“Ere tasted half their magic power,
Again return —again delight
Tlte retrospective hour,
With softer sway.
The wreath poetic fancy twines
Inspired by love or lur’d by fame,
With richer, gayer lustre shines
And flowers of prouder name,
Their odours give.
But thou who cwn’st a kindred mind,
Whose constant heart can feel the pow’r
Os friendship, sacred and refin’d,
Shall hail the cherish’d flower
Forgct-me-njt.
ERIN.
SARATOG A SPRINGS, June 5.
On Wednesday morning last, about 1 o’-
clock, a stranger"was observed to be loiter
ing; about Messrs. Sage & Stratton’s shoe
shop in this Village, under circumstances
which a wakened suspicion; he was of course
closely watched, and directly observed to
be breaking through one of the windows
which appears not to have been fastened.
When he was fairly in, the window was
guarded and the alarm given —Finding it
was unsafe to attempt an escape lie threw
himself on the floor a*>d pretended sleep.
On being brought before a magistrate, he
said his name was John Frederick Snyder,
a German by birth, and that he had lately
deserted from on board his Britanic Majes
ty’s ship, the Tremendous, laying at Que
bec. That most of the Mine since, he had
been “ on short allowance.” That on his
way from Sandy Hill he was overtake-’ by
the stage, and a gentleman in i> “ hailed”
him and invited him “on board that ne
took “ a birth in the bows with the steers - \
man” and came into Hie village, end was
set down with “ a bare six pence.” with
which lie soon contrived to make merry,
arid 11 please your honor,” said lie “ Iliad a
bit of a row.”
When the subject of his breaking into
the shop was advert* and to,he became very
earnest, and, screwing a large quid of to
bacco from his cheek, which he s*id into his
pocket, and then clearing his mouth of the
juice, he squared himself before the justice
in true sailor style, and pi icing one hand
to his hat, observed, “ well, 9ir, may it
please your honor, I can just tell you all a
bout that.—You know, sir, that a sailor
can’t swing his hammock on shore, and he
dont like to be on watch all night, so I was
just bring on and off there, when I saw a
port open and so turns in, and had just got
in a snood nap when these lubbers here pi*
ped me up, and that’s the truth on’l.” ’On
being reminded that it was rather lubbe ly
for a sailor to crawl into a port hole, he dry
ly observed “ but. tnay it please your lion
or, 3 ir, there was no gun in't When he
understood that he could not be excused,
he again squared himself before ihe justice,
and raising hi hit a little from his head
demanded a trial by “ court-marshal ,” ob
serving that he was uot conscious of hav
ing done a:v tiling out of the way, ami he
hoped he should have the privilege of a fair
trial. On being assured of that, he obser
ved with great earnestness “and if your
honor would just speak a good word to the
admiral I think I might get off this time.”
He was committed but a few hours after
the grand jurors >f the JUniterm were dis
charged. timt Jark will have to re
maiir under hatches at’ least a twelve
month.
KEW VIEW OF FLORIDA.
Letter to the JS’ational Intelligencer.
Pensacola, 4th &lay, 1822.
I have been in this place about four
weeks ; and, after passing through the im
mense and fertile regions of the west, and
seeing the stately forests luxuriant fields of
Ohio, Kentucky, and the other states be
yond the Alleghany ; the sterile, piney,
forests of Florida, Were not calculated to
make a favorable impression. The Flori
da*, as far as I can understand, may be
considered as a great forest of pine, inter
spersed with irreclaimable swamps, and
intersected with rivers, whose banks are
subject to inundation, and the low giounds,
though rich, unfit for cultivation; and, as
son as the low grounds are passed, the
pines again present themselves. The good
land is confined to the head-waters of the
rivers, and is in small proportion. Such
is the general physionomy of the country.
I do not think any part of it adapted to
to sugar, and none, i feel confident, to cof
fee. The staple of those parts capable of
tiliage must be cotton. I was not at all
disappointed in Pensacola. I expected to
see a village consisting of old ruinous wood
en houses, upon a deep sandy plain, but lit
tle elevated above the bay. The bay is
spacious and pretty well land-lucked, but
too extensive for a good harbour, in a coun
try subject to harricanes. Ships cannot
come nearer than within, half a mile of the
shore, which is very shoai.and there are no
wharves. Five entrance of the bay is wide,
and to defend the town, (were it worth de
fending) would require another fort at the
Barancas, opposite that already built. The
country in tlie rear, for 70 or 80 miles, is
a barren wilderness of pines, not habitable
in front of the Bty and Gulf ofMesi o.—
So that Pensacola is completely insulated,
deriving its substantial supplies of provife
ions entirely from New Orleans. The rt-
ver Escambia, empty ing into the bay, is an
inconsiderable stream, subject to overflow,
its only g.,nd lands being in Alabama, near
its bead waters. Pensacola, in my opinion
can never be a place of commercial impor
tance. It has no back country, no great li
vers to convey to the harbot the products
of the interior. Unlike N. Orleans, the
emporium of the great region of the wcsf.by
means of the noblest rivers in the world ;
or even Mobile, a very flourishing town,
which commands the trade of the two im
portant rivers Tombigbee and Alabama.—
l do think that Pensacola can be any thing
more than a retreat in summer for the in
habitants ol the lormer cities. The climate
here is ht. in summer, but the heat is mod
erated by the daily sea breeze, and the
nights are cool. The winters are damp,
chilly,and extremely unpleasant,with lie
quentand heavy rains, and much wind.-—-
The atmosphere, at that season, very un
favourable, to persons of catarrhal and pul
monary habits, diseases of the lungs being
very prevalent. From the absence of
marshes, remittent fevers are not very
common, those of a high grade sometimes
occur. The p'ace has been visited by yel
low fever. There is a very copious spring
of water near the town, but it is warm, the
temperature being, l think, twelve nr
fifteen degrees above that of the pump wa
ter in Georgetown. The soil here i rotn
ptetely silious sands without clay. Veg
etables can only be raised in the spring in
constant irrigation, and then they but par
tially succeed. In summer they are burnt
up. The only fruits are peaches, grapes
and figs. The two last arrive at high per
ncction. Tiie sweet orange does not suc
c°ed ; and, as that it considered ‘he crite
i ion of sugar cane, I should think, even
were the soil rich enough, sugar cane could
not be raised here. The market is badly
supplied and dear ; the beef, (the only
meat they have) is sea cely eatable, fowls
scarce and high, vegetables in small quan
tity and also dear. Fish are in variety
and abundance, but I do not think cf so
good flavor as they me to the North The
floor, bacon dj*c. obtained from O leans,
are not of good quality, and very dear. Io
short, living is bad & high, Jj” I would not
advise any epicure to steer his enures io
Pensacola. Mosquitoes are a great annoy
ance, aid musquetoe curtains are indis
pensible. Such, sir,is a faithful picture of
Pensacola, and, if it affords, you any a
inusemenf, I shall be gratified. The advan
tages of the place, as you will perceive,
have been greatly misunderstood and exag
gerated.
The inventor of Guvs, was Berthed
Swartz, ol Collen in Germany, by profess
ion a monk, who being addicted to the
study of chemistry, and compounding a
physical of nature, a spark of fire fell into
it and made it fly upwards. Whereupon
lie made a composition of powder, and
including it ir. an instrument of brass,
found it answer his intention, and bv thi*
accident came the invention of guns, which
grew into use about the year 1400, in a
fight between the Genoese and the Vene
tians at Clodia Fossa, in which the Vene
tian* having got it seems the secret from
the German Monk, made such slaughter
among their enemies, that they stood a
mazed to find so many of their soldiers kill
ed and wounded, and neither knew by
what means it came to pass, or how to pre
vent it, Inpsius will have it the invention
of demons, and not of men. Sir Walter
Raleigh ascribes it to the Indians, and
Valturius to the invention of Archimedes,
who by that inpans utterly destroyed the
whole fleet of ships commanded by Mar
cellus at the siege of Syracuse.
