The subscriber respectfully submits to the public the following PROPOSAL S, For publishing at. ITIIF..YS, in the State of Geor gia, u new lieekly paper, to be he. entitled the ATIIKNEUM. IN a community of Freemen, and where a disposition to patronise Literature and Sci ence is extensively manifested, the importance of a well conducted Newspaper, must, of ne cessity, be generally understood; and among a reading people, such a paper can hardly fail of being acceptable That the Atheneum will be a paper of this description, it might perhaps be deemed presumptuous to assert; but so far as the efforts of the Editor can render it useful, so far as persevering industry and attention can insure success to his undertaking—so far, at least, the subscriber can pledge himself, ihat he will endeavor to render his paper wtirth The growing importance of Athens, where the flourishing University of the Stale is loca ted, and surrounded, as it is, by an intelligent and wealthy neighborhood, has induced a behef that no place in the upper country presented a more inviting opening for ti e establishing ii new’ weekly paper—and the influence of this opinion has led to the presenc proposals, and the subscriber flatters himself, that, in the lib eral patronage of an enlightened community, his undertaking will receive an approving sanc tion. And while his own exertions will be er severingly employed to furnish a paper which shall be useful to his supporters, lie will ven ture to hope that bis columns may be diversified by the occasional communications of such scien tific and literary friends as may be disposed, through this medium, to aid him, and benefit the community. To matte bis paper useful, v. ill be the propri etor’s pi incipal aim ; and in the furtherance of tins object, lie will endeavor to give t be earliest Foreign and Domestic Intelligence, with such portions of Congressional matter, when the Na tional Legislature are in session, as his limits will'allow—together with such original or se lected Political Communications, or Moral F.s says as have the public good in view, and are free from personalities : but to articles intended merely to gratify revengeful feelings, and to provoke or continue personal contests, no place will be given. And though m judging of these the editor may occasionally err, it is to be ho ped that no improper motives may be supposed to influence his decision, inasmuch as the right of rejecting, well as of inserting communica tions, must lie reserved to himself. As an editor it will b a his interest —as it will be, under all circumstances, his inclination — to give general satisfaction. From the line of impartial duty, lie will endeavor not to depart ; and none shaii have cause to accuse him of vol untarily giving a needless offence to a single in dividual. ]i will scarcely be necessary to say, that the poli’ teal complexion of the. Atheneum will be Republican In this age of light and knowledge, and in this country, none other ought to a<k, or could be expected to receive, public patron age. CONDITIONS. The Atheneum will be published once a week, on a super-royal sheet, and delivered tosubscri bers v or forwarded by mail, at Three Dollars a year, payable in advance, or Four Dollars, it payment is deferred to the end ofthe year. \ll subscriptions will be for one year at least, and tiil a discontinuance is directed. No paper discontinued, except at the option of the editor, until all dues are paid. i Advertisements will be inserted at the usual rates. (Pj'Persons disposed to encourage the under taking, are requested to signify the same by the first of September, as it is contemplated to issue the first number earlv in that month. BENJAMIN BRANTLY. of newspapers in Georgia, are re quested to give the above a few insertions. Augusta, J une 29 55 Travellingfr. The route through Pennsylvania, Virginia and the Caroli nas, will be confined as much to the neighbor hood of the mountains, as the good roads thro’ the country’ will allow'. The journey will „e leisurely taken, so as to consume from four to live or even six weeks, dependent somewhat on the inclination of the persons who may become passengers. Those who are disposed to engage seats for the above described journey, can do so by ap plying to the Poet-master at Savannah Prior ity in the choice of seats will be regulated by numbering the first applicant one, which will entitle that person to the first selection, and so on to the last.
