J u ’- V <J SATURDAY MORNING—-AUGUST 3, 5822. The subscriber respectfully submits to the public the following PROPOSAL S, For publishing at A I'ffE.X'S, in the State of Geor gia, anew weekly paper, to be be entitled the ATHKNKUM. !N a community of Freemen, and where a disposition to patronise Literature and Sci ence is extensively manifested, the importance of a well conducted Newspaper, must, of ne-j ceSsity, be generally understood; and among a reading people, such a paper ctyn hardly fail ot beiti.i acceptable. That the Atheneum w ill be a paptV of vliis description, it might perhaps be deemed presumptuous to assert ; but so far us the efforts of the Editor can render it useful, so far as persevering industry and attention can insure success to his undertaking—o far, at least, the subscriber can pledge himself, that he will endeavor to render his paper worth The grot*. ig importance cf Athens, where the fli- i ishni’ University of the State is loca ted, and surrounded, as it is, by an intelligent and wealthy reip;tiT rhood, has induced a belief Inal no place in tlie upper country presorted a more inviting opem. g for the establishing a new weekly paper—and the influence of t.iis opinion has ted to the present proposals, and the subscriber flatters himself, that, i:i the lib• era! patronage of an enlightened community, Ins undertaking will reef iveah approving sanc tion. And while his own exertionswill be per severingly employed to furnish a paper which shall be useful to his supporters, he will ven- i turcto hope that his columns may be diversified by the occasional communications of such scien tific and literary friends as may be disposed, through this medium, to aid him, and benefit the community. To make iiis paper useful, will be the propri etor's principal aim ; and in the furtherance of this object, he wifi endeavor to give the earliest Foreign and Domestic Intelligence, with such portions of Congressional matter, when the Na tional Legislature are in session, as Ins limits will allow—together v illi such original or se lected Political Communications, or Moral Es says as have the public gnod in view, and are free from personalities : but to articles intended merely to gratify revengeful feelings, and to provoke or continue personal contests, no place will he given. And though n judging of these the editor may occasional); er> it is to be ho ped that no improper motives may be supposed to influence his decision, inasmuch’ as the right of rejecting, as well as of inserting communica tions, must be reserved jto himself. As an editor it will lm ins interest —as it will be, under all circumstances, his inclination— to give general satisfaction. From the line of impartial duty, he will endeavor not to depart; and none shall have cause to accuse him f vol untarily giving a needless offence to a single in dividual. I! w ill scarcely he necessary to say; that the political complexion of the Atheneum will be Republican. In this age of light and.kno”dedge, and in this country, none other ought to ask, or could be expected to receive, public patron- CONDITION b. The Atheneum will be published once a week, on a super-royal sheet, and deliveredlostibscri bers, or forwarded by mail, at Three Dollars a year, payable in advance, or Four Dollars, if payment is deferred to the end of the year. Ail subscriptions will be for one year at least, and till a discontinuance is directed. No paper discontinued, except at the option of the editor, until all dues are paid. I Advertisements w ill be inserted at the usual rates. (Tj-Persons disposed to encourage the utuier taking, are requested to signify the same by the first of September, as it is contemplated to issue the first number early in that month.
