That the Atl.eneum will be a paper of this description, it might perhaps be deemed presumptuous to assert; but so far as the efforts of the Editor can render it useful, so far as persevering industry and attention can insure success to liis undertaking—so far, at least, the subscriber can pledge Himself, that he will endeavor to render his paper wi rtli The grow ing importance of Athens, where the flourishing University of the State is loca ted, and surrounded, as it is, by an intelligent and wealthy neighborhood, has induced a be'fef that no place in the upper country presented a more inviting opening for the establishing a new weekly paper—and the influence of this opinion has led to (he present proposals, ami Mu subscriber flatters bin seif, that, in the lib eral patronage of an enlightened community, Ins undertaking will r C-. iv.-an approving sanc tion. To make his paper useful, will be (he propri etor's principal aim ; audio the furtherance of tins ob ject, he will endeavor to give the arliest Foreign and Domestic Intelligence, with such portions ofC ngressional mat er, when the Na tional Legislature are in session, as bis Hurts will allow—together with such original or se lected Political Communications, or Moial Es says as have the public good in view, and are free from personalises : but to articles intended merely to gratify revengeful feelings, and to provoke or continue personal contests, n<> place will be given. And though in judging of these the editor may occasionally err, it is to be ho ped that no improper motives may be supposed to influence his decision, inasmuch as the right f rejecting, a well as of inserting communica tions, must be reserved to himself. As an editor it will be his interest —as it will be, under u!l circurn-.tances, his inclination — to give geneial satisfaction. From the line of impartial duty, lie will endeavor not to depart ; anu none shall have cause to accuse hi n os vol untarily giving a needless offence to a single in dividual.
