THURSD AY MORNING—SEPTEMBER 19, 1822. 1 he subscriber respectfully submits to the I public the following PROPOSALS, . For publishing at jfTHRNS, in the State of Geo-, gw, a neso week !$ paper, to be be entitled the athuneum. IN a community bf Freemen, and where a disposition to patronise Literature and Sen ence is extensively manifested, the imp.ortance ot a well conducted Newspaper, must, cf ne cessity, be generally understood; and among a reading people, such a paper ran hardly fail of being acceptable That the AtLeneum wilL be a paper of this description, it might perhaps | be deemed presumptuous to assert; but so far as the efforts of the Editor can render it useful, so far as persevering industry and attention can insure success to lus undertaking—so far, at least, the subscriber can pledge himself, that lies will endeavor to render l.is paper worth , The growing importance of Athens, where the flourishing University of the State is loca ted, and surrounded, as it is, by an intelligent and wealthy neighborhood, lias induced a belief that no place in the upper country presented a more inviting opening for (be establishing a new weekly paper—and the influence of this opinion has led to the present proposals, and the subscriber flatters himself, that, in the lib era! patronage of an enlightened community, Ins undertaking will rt ceivc.au approving sanc tion. _ And while his own-exertions will be ptr severingly employed to furnish a paper wlfiyli shall be useful to his supporters, be will ven ture to hope that hiscohftnns may be diversified by the occasional communications of such scien tific and literary friends as may be disposed, through this medium, to aid him, and benefit the community. To make his paper useful, will be the propri etor’s principal aim ; ami in the furtherance of this object, lie will endeavor to give the earliest Foreign and Domestic Intelligence, with such portions of Congressional mat er, when the Na tional Legislature are in session, as his limits will allow—together with such original or se lected Political Communicaiions, or Moral Es says as have the public good in view, and are fi t'? from personalities : but to articles intended merely to •.'.■•a'ifv revengeful feelings, and to ■novoke or Coi.tif lie personal contests, no place will be given. And though in judging of these tbs editor may occasionally’ err, it is to be ho ped that no improper motives may be supposed to influence his decision, inasmuch as the right cf rejecting, a> well as of inserting commutiica- , turns, roust i>e reserved to himself. As an editor it will l> his interest —as it will lie, under ad circumstances, his inclination — to give general satisfaction From the line of impartial duty, be will endeavor not to depart; and none shall have cause to accuse him -f vol untary v giving a needless offence to a single in dividual. It will scarcely be necessary to say, that the political comr.lexion of the Athenetim will bit Republican In this age of light and knovdedge, and in this country t hone other ought to ask, or could be expected to receive, public patron- CONDITIONS. The Athenetim will be published once a week, on a super-royal sheet, and delivered to subscri bers. or fontarded by mai*, at Three Dollars a vear, payable in advance, or Four Dollars, il payment is deferred to the end of the year. All subscriptions will be for one year at lea t, and till a discontinuance is directed. No paper discontinued, except at the option of the editor, until all dues are paid. _ Advertisements will be inserted at the usua. rates. rrj-Persons disposed to encourage the under taking, are requested to signify the same by the first of September, as it is contc mplated to issue the first number early in that month.
