through county authorities to
the troops in the field, at the rates pre
scribed in the advertisement. Soldiers’

abled materially to enlarge the sphere of
their operations and usefulness. The Gov
ernor and State Legislature will see, too,
that under the scale of prices, established
by their resolutions of seizure, they w'ill
be able to make a handsome speculation in
clothing the troops. In the Riiigle article
©t shoes for. example which thoy seize at
three dollars, and sell to the Government
at six, they will realize a net profit of
$225,000, which will^be a handsome opera
tion even in war times. Let attention ev

One nl‘ the Choctaw planters is the own
er of228 slaves, and ten of the largest
planters of that tribe avorago 64 each.
Among the Che.rokces, the largest planter
owns 57 slaves, and the ten largest aver
age 85 each. Among the Creeks, two
t .ilantcrs hold 75 siavos each—and -the ten
«rgestaverago43 each. Among the Chick-
asaws, tho largest planter owns 64 slaves,
and the ten largest average 27 J each. The
census gives detailed statistics, showing
that there are 1,983 white persons in the
Terrritory, and 404 free colored persons.
Of the whites, 1,816 are males, and 672
(males. They are settled in nearly every
in tho Territory, have established
, and no doubt wield a preponder-
fluenee in affairs. The free colored
people are unquestionably those who ac
company the white settlers. The Indian
population of this Territory is 65,680.
At the market price of cotton to-day
cur now useioas staple is of value enough to
pay, of itself, every dollar which the Con
federate States owe. At this raomont
there are 3,000,000 bales of cotton within
the country which, at the ruling prices of
the staple now, is v worth $700,000,000.
Since tho world began no nation has ever
had in its hands so much wealth in a single
article of production. The consumption
of cotton is increasing in a ratio far faster
. than the increased moans of its production,
and this results, in a great degree, from
the now fabrics to which it is being
applied, to say nothing of the increase of
tho world’s population, and the now civil-
laations which immediately require its use.
Regarding these interesting facts and sta
tistics with respect to this annual store of
vrealtb, it is impossible to suppose that the
sum of debt which this war will accumulate
can be unmanageable or fall with intolera
ble weight upon our people.

should cause every true American to blush

The barbarities of Butler’s rangers in Wyo-

If the reports are true (and they como 'well

conduct of the war, all restraint and disci

Notice.
A SHORT time since we gave notice that wc would
sell shoes and leather at reduced rates to our home
customers and trade. Since that notice, wo have re- >
ceived letters from various counties over thcStste, and
some out of the State, wishing leather and shoes at the
prices named in the notice. " It being out of our power
to supply-onerfourth the demand, we have concluded
to sell said leather aud shoes at the customary rates of
our country. Owing to the scarcity of hides and tie
high prices me have to pay, (27 cts. iu Savannah,) **
are of opinion .that shoes and leather will go higher.
