NEW REGIMENT OF INFANTRY,
FOR STATE SERVICE.
I AM authorized to raise a Regiment of INFANTRY
for State service, from persons between the ages c>f
17 and IS and 45 and 50,. This llegiuent will not be
required to go out of the State, and will ouly bo kept
on duty while their services are actually necessary for
tho defence of the State. As this class of militia are
now called for by the Government, and will soon be
enrolled for tho Confederate service, now is the time
fur them to volunteer and secure an ci.-y place and
avoid conscription.
Five companies arc now wanting to complete the
Regiment, which will be accepted from the counties of
Jackson,- Uull, Banks, Franklin, Madison or Gwinnett,
or elsewhere, if properly organized and rendered. For

I standi the 36th, embracing tfie counties of Chatham,
Bryan, Effingham, Coffee, Ware, Clinch, Fatly, Cnl-
hoqp, Baker, Stewart, Webster, Quitman, Dooly, Wil
cox, Pulaski, Bihb, Monroe, Pika, Franklin, Hart,
Habcrshitm, MerriWcther, Coweta and Campbell.
Now, therefore, I, Joseph E. Brown, Governor and
Commandcr-in-Cbie^ do hereby declare the militia or
ganizations theretofore existing i n said Districts, under
tbo Military Code of Georgia, stupeiided, and do relievo
the Militia Officers under ‘said previous organizations
from their commands, and do hold said officers subject

Smplojment of Free Negroes and Slaves

At the last session of Congress a law was
passed to obviate the deficiency of the ar-
my ty the employment of free negroes and
•/, slaves in certain capacities. This law has
.*< almost ejeaped public notice, especially as
•‘. it hai remained for a considerable time
unexecuted.
Wo heat*, however, that the conscription
officers have recently been instructed to
“ carry out the law, and a descent on the
^ vast ,icrd of free nogroes congregated, in
,,,.this city, may be momentarily expected.
•if The law requires that all male free ne-

including those who are free under tbe
di treaty of Paris of 1803, or nnder the treaty
° of Spain of 1819, resident in tbe Confede-
^ rate States, between the ages of eighteen

nection with tbo militiry defences of the

of eighteen and above tho age of fifty are
exempt. 3d. The hire for slaves impressed

tbe appraisers under the act to regulate
impressments. 4th. The limitation as to
the term for which slaves shall bo impress
ed for service shall be for twelve months
instead of the terms fixed by said orders,
