JUDGE WALL’S LETTER.
One of the ihoet sitisibiething* we hare
aoen from' a Northern etrnreo, Ihr a long
time past, is the letter'of c*j.^onator Wall,
of New. Jersey, to he found in our columns
to-day. > f! >■-'! i. .£•'
New Establishwtftt. .
We would-direct the leaderV attention
to the, adrertisoment of ifessra -Hope,
Findley & Co., who have jest opened a new
establishment on the north'tide of Broad,
street.
ANOTHER ALAttM;-
We had 11 another false alarm of an ap
proaching raid last week, which was said
to be at Sheppard’s bridge, some fourteen
miles from town. Our local companies and
other military forces were soon ready for
duty, but the alarm was ascertained to he'
groundless. ,..
While those who convey to our authori
ties information of approaching danger are
entitled to the thanks of the community,
they ought to be very careful to verify such
runners as may reach them, before report
ing them as facts.*
KRW MILITARY DISTRICT-
A new military district has been estab
lished, its headquarters at this town, and
Gen. Reynolds assigned to tho District and
Poet. Col. Magill, wo learn, has been as
signed, to duty at Columbia, S. C.
We have not learned tho boundaries of
the new District,- but presume it induces
ail that region of Georgia lying east of
the Chattahoochee and North of Athens;
or, indeed, it may include a greater breadth
©fceunlry.
Ger. Reynolds is a gentleman *'* not un
known to fame,” and Till doubtless bring
to the dscharge of bis duties Jo his new
field of service all the energy and ability
for which he is distinguished.
DON’T NEGLECT SIRUP AND SUGAR.
As everybody has planted largely of the
Chinese sugar cane this year,, it is hoped
that great attention will be bestowed",
upon making it into.improved syrop. Let
not a stalk of tho cane bo . wasted. And
when your cane is thoroughly matured,
d< n't forget to try experiments m sugar
making. If the first trial fail, try again.
Tho process is said t* be simple, and tfiere
is noexcuse for failing. Remember, every
gallon of syrup and every pound of sugar
made will not only add to the comfort of
your own families, but of the brave soldiers
In the field, who are risking everything for
you. r
THE LATEST NEWS.
We have au unusual quantity of good
ae **b this week, and if it all be true, we
may safely congratulate one readers upon
the improved aspect of affairs.
First comes intelligence of the opera
tions of Wheeler iu Sherman’s rear—de
stroying Federal supplies and cutting off
transportation. Then there is the news of
Forrkst’s bold (jash'into Memphis, capture*'
of prisoners, hofsl^, &C. The nows of the
defeat of tho Fedcrals -on the Weldon rail-
read, which they had-hold iu their posses
sion several days, by A. P. Hill and Wade

throughout the Confederacy..
The nows of the withdrawal of the Fbd-

may prove to bo correct, boweyer.^ v>

Then there is the jm.nor^o-tucermng the
proposed armistice, pcafcfi^JminireioB ,.‘&cV
John Morgan, it appews, is Bast
Tennessee, having entered tho State at
Bristol! and marching in the direetten of
Knoxville.
The only news of any unpleasant charac

have been disgraced by the surrender and
(Abandonment of nearly all oiir fortifica
tions. Not one of them, except glorious
Fort -feuinter at Charleston, has been held
V it should have been.
Upon the whole, the news is very cheer
