oductlon.
It lias long boon known to nil well in
formed agriculturists that it la ndrantageoua (Jflj
to frequently change tho crops grown on any tn t
particular field. The principle of rotation is
now. we suppose, univeraally admitted by wSer ,- in th# s#dtb / j
thinking farmers, though from various causes •» pii cn ii.,o t« aptn
far from liclng universally practiced. The 1 —
benefits of rotation have been more than once
pointed out in these pages, and several prac
tical systems laid down. It is notour purpose
now to recur to these points.bul to illustrate the
general principle by reference to some curious
facts in tbs history of plants.
In 1825. Durcan de la Malle called the atten
tion of scientific men to the phenomenon of
natural rotation. From long observation of
what takes place in woods aud pasture lands,
lie established the fact that an alternation of
growth, ns he called it, occurs us a natural
phenomenon, the grnsses getting the upper
hand at one timo and the legumes at another;
so 'hut in the course of thirty years ho was a
witness of five or six such alternations.
In woodlands, as is well known, a similar
phenomenon is observable. Tho writer just
referred to, relates how, after tho foiling or
the timber in forests of a particular district of
France, broom, foxglove, heaths, birch trees
aud nspons sprang up. replacing tho oak. the
beach and tho ash. felled by the woodman.
After thirty years the birch and poplars were
felled in their turn. Still very few of the origi
nal possessors of tho soil, the oaks, etc., made
their appearance; the ground was still occu-.
pied with young birch and poplar. It is not
till after the third repetition of the coppicing
—after an interval of ninety years—that the
oaks and beech re-conquer their original posi
tion. They retain it for a time, and' then the
struggle begins again.
Antiquarian researches have proved also that
in tho natural state of tilings, mid without any
violent change in external conditions, tho na
ture of forests becomes altered. The Her-
cynian forests, of which Csesnr speaks, and
which lucn consisted ofdocidnous-Io n’ed trees,
are now made up principally of conifers. A
forest which, in the middle ages, was of beech,
is now stocked with oifk, aud rice versa.
Again, wo have tho evidence afforded by sub
merged forests and peat-bogs, according to
which certain plants, now extinct in particular
localities, once flourished there. We are not
alluding to plants that may bare required n
different climate from what they now experi
ence. but to suoji coses as the silver fir, the
Scotch lir, pinus mughus, etc., which are found

in the partially fossilized condition, in spots
whero there is apparently nothin” to prevent
Jhem from growing now. where in fact they do
grow well when planted.
Foresters in all parts of the world are well
aware of these facts, and botanists watch with
interest the appearance of a different vegeta
tion whenever some accident has interfered
with previously existing conditions.
When woods aro cut dowu, when soil from a
depth is laid on the surface, when extensive
fires occur, when lakes are drained ; in fact,
when any sodden alteration takes place in ex
ternal circumstances, then we may expect to
find a correspond ing change in tho vegetation.
One set of plants profits by the chango, ano
ther suffers. It may bo asked, "Where do the
now arrivals come from 7” Sometimes, no
doubt, the seeds are waited from a distance
and, finding a suitable abiding place, germi
nate. This is, perhaps, more especially the
case with the spores of fnngi, whose extreme
minuteness favors their dispersion in this way.
But it often happens that the facts of the c«9e
will not admit of such interpretation and then
we can only fall back on tho supposition that
the seeds or bulbs existed in the soil, but un
der circumstances not favorable to their de
velopment.
The Roil in this way is looked upon by Do
Coudolie and Darwin as a vast magazine of
seeds, bulbs and roots capable of retaining
their vitality for a more or less prolonged pe
riod according to circumstances., and ready to
avail themselves of any change that may be
lienefieial to them. >
