I’VE BEEN THINKING.
I've been thinking, I've been thinking
What a glorious world were this.
Did folks tnind their business more,
And mind their neighbors’ less;
For instance, you and I, my friend,
Are sadly prone to talk.
Of matters that concern us not,
And others’ follies mock.
I've been thinking, If we’d begin
To mind our own affairs,
That possibly our neighbors might
Contrive to manage theirs.
We’ve faults enough at home to mend—
It may be so with others;
It would seem strange if it were not,
Sinco all mankind are brothers.
Ob 1 would that wo bad charity
For every man and woman :
Forgiveness is the mark of those
Who know “ to err is human,”
Then let us banish jealousy—
Cot’s lift our fallen brother;
And ns we journey down life’s road,
Do good to one another.
A Demoralized Man.
Agriculture would demoralize a saint. 1
was almost a saint when I went into it. I'm
a domon now. I’m at war with everything.
I hgbt myself out of bed at four o’clock when
all my better nature tells me to lie still till
seven. I fight myself into tha garden to work
like u brute, when reason and instinct tell me
to 6tny in the house and enjoy myself like a
man. I fight the pigs, the chickes, the moles,
the birds, the bugs, the worms—everything
in which is the breath of life. I fight the
docks, the burdocks, the mullins, the thistles,
tbo grapes, the weeds, the roots, the whole
vegetable kingdom. I fight tbo heat the frost,
the rain, the hail—in short, I fight the uni
verse, and get whipped in every battle. ]

Wisdom of Silence.
A courier of Alexander tbe Great paid a
