r>r.e noticeable change in Christmas here is
ihe annually diminishing numbers of colored
•<rj)le on our streets. Since " freedom come

:h-i did in ante helium days. Freedom brings
care and responsibility. Sambo must now

Suicide—A Sad
Col. Samuel J. Anderson, who was Gov.
Crawford’s Secretary daring tbs four years
of his administration, afterwards chief clerk
under him in the War Department and subse
quently Clerk of the House, committed suicide
in Atlanta last week, by shooting himself with
s pistol. He went to work wary coolly aad
deliberately, having made six or eight unsuc
cessful attempts heretofore. He wrote letters
to several friends and left a will, in which he
made several unimportant bequests to survi
ving friends—one of which was, in substance
as follows: 44 1 leave my pistol to B.Toombs,
advising him to follow my example.’’
It seems that Goo. Toombs had, hi the kind
ness ol his heart advanced money to the deceas
ed on several occasions, and to prevent him
from feeling dependent, bad at onetime pre
tended to employ him at $125 per month to
assist in preparing papers in an important
law suit. Col. A. bad drawn on hire several
times for money, and hie drafts were alwaya
honored. He considered the engagement a per
manent one—Gen. T. intended it only for
temporary relief. The last draft was suffered
to go to protest, and this seems to have given
mortal offence to Col. A., and bonce his sin
gular bequest to bis benefactor.
The deceased bad been married three times,
bat at the time of his death was living alone
although all of his wives survive him.

Mr. Editor : As next Wednesday, the 6th
of January, is tbs day for the election of eonnty
officers, we hope that every one will torn out
and vote for the nominees, and pat at rest ths
idea of running independent candidates.—
Although the men running as independents
may be very clever and capable, yet they seek
crowning infamy than the action of the Lynch
Returning Board. It surpasses even the mid
night order of Durell, and would not be sub
mitted to by any free people. Resistance to
the national authority, represented hero by a
large portion of the army and a naval fleet
sustaining a usurpation and stifling the voice
of the people, has never been meditated.

Public Amusements.
List year, the complaint was that he had
so few theatrical, operatic and concert troupes.
The present season there has been no laci of
timbers, but there is g refit complaint of the
quality of the article. Onr people are not so
theatre-hungry as to be satisfied with any
thing and everything in the rbape of a drama.
Let us have something that is worty of pablic

but wa cannot afford to patronize troupes ten
degrees below mediocrity.
