Too Much Cotton.
The mania for planting cotton to thocx
elusion of breadstuff's has seized npon the
farmers of North Georgia equally as strong
anil has upon the planters of Lower and
Middle Georgia, and its bad effects are al
most equally marked. To-day corn is
selling in Whitfield county for 61 por
bushel. Three years ago at this time ii
was difficult to sell at 50 cents. Three
years ago pork sold at 4 lo 5 cents, and it
was very scarce. What will be the result
of this suicidal course? in five years
from l« day lour-fifths of the farmers ol
North Georgia will be bankrupts, as they
now are in Middle ai d South .Georgia.
Will cor farmers never learn the great
sueee.-s in farming, viz: that of planting
diversified crops? Plant wheal, rye,'oats
cot ti, potatoes, peas, and il any land left
after planting enough for ail ordinary
contingencies, then tho balance in cotton
IV ith remarkable poor crops for three suc
cessive years, ovei-200,000 bales more have
been raised than is necessary for consump
tion, and eon-equently prices have ranged
so low as lo bo barely remunerative. Sup
pose a good year and a full crop made,
cotton would go down to seven or five
cents, and every planter would lose his all
in the venture. But if all necessary pro
visions were made for the maintainanco of
his family, the cotton planted as an extra,
then in no contingency could it affect him
materially. Wc are glad lo sec the Stai
Agricultural society, and tho Commission
ers of AgricuKuro, advising and impress
ing upon tho p!aniingintcrc9t thoabsolule
necessity of not putting moro than one
third of their crop in cotton.
Tho commissioner of Agriculture says :
“A careful inquiry made by this depart
ment has failed to find a singlo farmer
who has always raised his supplies, who
is not out ol debt ar.d in easy ii not in
thrifty circumstances. On tho other hand
the same careful inquiry has failed lo find
a singlo farmer, who pursued a different
policy, who its not more or less embarrassed
frequently to a serions extent.” There
fore, we would urgently request our far
mers lo stop and think beforo they tuk
a step that will involve them, and all olh
ers dependent upon them in financial ruin

Apples.
With most of us, tho value of tho apple
ns an article of food is greatly underrated
Besides containing a large amount of su
gar, mucilage, and other nutritive matter,
apples contain vegetable acids, aromatic
qualities, Ac., which act powerfully in the
capacity of refringements, tonics, antisep
ties ; and, freely used at the season oftncl
low ripeness, they prevent debility, ir.di
gestion, arid avert, without doubt, many
of the “ills which flesh is heir to.” The
operatives of Cornwall consider ripe ap
ples nearly as nourishing as bread, far
more so than potatoes In the year ISO!
on tho part of their owners. A great,
perhaps the greatest, cause of loss is, most
farmers keep poor cows. A poor cow
ardly pays, while a good one pays a hand
some profit. It will cost but little more
to keep a good cow than a poor one. The
farmer will' make from six to eight pounds frM ^** ,orlIneB i | " f

Hots in Horses.
The complete inefficiency of the various
popular panaceas for hots in horses may
bo better understood when we cotne to
know something of the nature of these per
sistent parasites. They tiro not worms,
but larva) of a fly, and are possessed of
remarkable powers of endurance under
adversity. The most insinuating circum
stances are but as milk and honey to them,
and in an instance recently recorded, a
colony of them attached to the stomach
of a dead horse were not inconvenienced by
an hour’s exposure to a bath of spirits of
turpentino. But. when whale oil was
poured upon them they let go their hold and
died almost instantly. Now, whale oil
being thus indicated us an effective dose
and being an aperient in its action upon
the horse, would seem to bo tho remedy
that would be chosen before any other.
At least it might bo well to havo dome
experiments mado and theresullscarefuily
noticed and mado note of.
