Northeastern Extension.
The amount of business notv done by the
southern division of the Northeastern Rtilroad
shows the importnneo of continuing it to th
Northern terminus, and securing a connection
vith the Great West via Knoxville.
The greatest obstacle in the way is the con
struetino of that portion of the road which
des in North Carolina. There is so small a
portion of that. State directly interested in
it, that it veil: be very difficult to obtain State
-tid, and the people of that section of tboState
•Ike ourrelves, are poor. Outside aid, there
fore, is greatly needed There are three rail
roads in this State which would be benefited
tn a large extent by the completion of the
route to Knoxville—we mean the Airline, the
Georgia, and the Central Railroad, provided
it will extend its Eatonton branch to this city.
Our road and its connections, when once
completed, will become one of the most im
portant thoroughfares in the South. The
freight over it. would give profitable employ
ment to baf a dozen ordinary lines of railway,
and this, too, without material Injury to the
{State Road, whieh will always dt> a large ba-
einees.

a meeting was called at the academy in the
above named place, the object of which was
lectures in behalf of the temperance cause.
Lectures wore delivered by D. C. Oliver. C
W. C. T., of Hanks county aDd J. W. G. Wut-
kins of Evening Star Lodge, Homer, Ga. The
lectures were very appropriate—picturing in
a beautiful manner the evils of intemperance.
After the lectnres, names were solicit- d and
twenty-four readily and willingly offered them
selves as candidates for initiation into tho
Order. On tho night of Oct. IStb the Lodge
