. .Nearly all kinds of seeds will vegetate
sooucr, and more freely, if well soaked iu
blood-warm water before sowing particu
larly if the seed be of a hard drjL nature,
or the weather at all dry. The fvequeut
complaints that are. made of the mangle-
murtzol, and beet seeds, usually arise from
a- neglect of this precaution. Tho most
extensive and successful cultivation of
these roots, always soak the seeds three
or four times before Bowing.
Salt as n Fertilizer.
Tho application of suit oil laud for crops
of grass and grain is a growing practice
in this country. A very considerable de
mand for salt for this purpose hits been es
tablished in our Southern towns. Dirty
suit, or thut of uii inferior quulity, is : s ef
ficient us any, and comes cheaper. It is
applied at the rat of from one to tb.ee
bushels per acre upon barley, wheat aud
aits. One bushel of salt is good for three
or four bushels of grain. The liost results
were formerly realized when salt was sown
ou barley, the production being increased
several bushels, if sown pretty freely, say
three or lour bushels per acre, the bcnellts
arc visible for several seasons.
The experiments of S. Ai. Brown, several
years ago. showed that the application of
salt on winter wheat was obviously advan
tageous. Tho ertcet seemed to he seen in
stiffening the straw, by which its falling
down and rusting. t:ius shrinking tho he
ry, was prevented, ll the cllivt upon
spring wheat is what Mr. Fish represents
it to tie. all Central ami Western New Yo.k
can go into the production of that variety
and make it profitable.
Fora long period salt has Itceu used to a
large extent on the growing crops iu Great
Britain. It has been there ascertained that
sixteen bushels per acre will kill all kinds
ot vegetation. Eight bushels per acre may
be safely applied. From two to four bush
els i«*r acre would probably ensure suffi
ciently favorable results iu this country.
There can be no doubt that the farmers
would obtain valuable return from the use
of salt upon the grain crops. Tlie price of
the article is very low at present, and like
ly to remain so permanently, so that no
objectiou to its employment iu the way-
suggested can be urged.—Country Gentle
