Tortui^s that Need Not be Endured. People suffer a great deal of pain unnecessary. Ar.ionp tortures that need not be endured are those afflicted by the Rheuir. itlsm and gcrat, since the acrid clement of the blood which produces them by contact with the sensitive covering of the muscles, and joints may be eliminated by the use ot that matchless depurent. Hostettor’s Stomach Bitters, be fore the inflammatory symptoms are developed to any great exteut. When it is considered what excruciating torture* Rheumatism iuflicts, »nd what a tendency it has, when ful ly developed, to attack the heart, the advisability of an ear ly use of such a reliable antidote becomes at once apparent. The rheumatic virus is expelled from the blood by the in creased action of the kidneys—which net cs strainers—pro duced by the Bitters, and the sufferer will ff"d, if lie uses this supreme defensive agent, that he will b« protected against a return of the agonizing complaint. Dyspepsia, fever ana ague, liver and bowel complaints and other mal adies, are also cured by this admirable remedy. Agrcnt at Jeffersou. Mr. A. H. Brock is the authorized agent for the Southern Watchman at Jefferson, Jackson county. Agent at Lawrenceville. We have secured the services of Mr. W. H. Harvey, post master at Lawrenceville, as agent for the Southern Watchman iu that town. - “ 8iun«ili-»ip.»» A pair of burses attached to a pine Ion, which had been left standing in front oi the Methodist church, Sunday night, took fright and ran down the street, taming the vehicle o ver, and damaging it to some extent. Fortunately, nobody was hurt. Qaiet. We have never seen such a quiet and orderly time in our city as at present. The police have been out of employment for several days, and there has not bee n the slightest attack of drunkenness to be seen within the corporate limits of our city during the past week. Mr. A. H. Lane, Formerly of this city, hut now of Savan nah, where he is connected with the Cen tral Bailroad, returned home on Friday, on a short leave of absence, and was glad ly greeted by all his old friends. Mr. L. is an energetic, honest, reliable, clevergentle- man, and always gives entire satisfaction to his employers. The Central Road au thorities no doubt fully appreciate the faithful services of such men as Mr. L. We wish him a pleasant time during his rustication. Elegant Cider. The editors and printers of the WateJt- man return thanks to Mr. 0. C. Harbin, the courteous and clever superintendent of Capt. B. H.* Lumpkin’s “Turf Exchange,” for a pitcher of sweet, sparkling, elegant cider, which, after having been disposed >f, was unanimously voted to be “ A, No 1.” The “ Turf” is also well supplied with the best lager beer and other “ drinkables.’ Recovered. We are pleased to state that our young friend, D. J. Rhodes, who has been “laid up” for some days with measles, has re covered and is again able to attend to bus iness. Alnaoat a Froat. Last Saturday this section was visited by a heavy fall of rain, which lasted all lay. During the night the clouds cleared away, and all day Sunday the wind blew (juito hard from the Northwest. As a con sequence, the weather was quite cool on Monday morning, and we think we just barely escaped a frost. Death. Mrs. Bradshaw, daughter ot Mr. B. 0. W. Ilose, of the police force, died on Monday, ot a complication ot diseases. OfT lo AugiiKin. As usual, a large number of our citizens have gone to Augusta, to attend the annual convention of the stockholders of the Geor gia Railroad. Agentat Lexington. Capt. J. G. Hartsfield is the authorized agent of the Southern Watchman at Lex ington, Oglethorpe county, Ga. Au Incontrovertible Fact. There is no assertion whieh can be made that is as strong aud convincing as actual experiment. This is true of Barbershops as well as everything else. Now, Reid & Harris claim to have the best Barbering and Hair-Dressing establishment iu the city, and in order to place the matter be yond controversy, they ask the public to call at their shop and test the matter by actual-experiment. Waiver Notes. We have two or three different forms of notes waiving homestead exemption, relief aud all other laws to prevent the collection of debts, printed in elegant style, on good paper, which can be had in any quantity to suitpurchasers. We also keep deeds, bonds, mortgages, and all other blanks in general use. Agate Iren-Ware.” We have examined a new material call ed “ agate iron-ware,” which Maj. J. C. Wilkins uow has on hand and for sale. He has all kinds of vessels adapted to fam ily use, such as rice boilers, milk and sauce pans, Ac. It is claimed that this ware is entirely impervious to heat or vegetable acids, and ft is sold at reasona ble rates. It is certainly very handsome ware, and we advise house-keepers to call and examine it for themselves. Xliiarral Wealth* While in Babuu county last week, we were shown many rich and beautilul speci mens of gold, silver, <tc. We are satisfied that Rabun, like almost all the counties of Northeast Georgia, is rich in all the val uable minerals, and the completion of the Railroad through to Knoxville, would sooo develope the finest mining and manufac taring country in the South. Let the good work be commenced at ouedj and we be lieve the people along the line, though poor, will “ lend a helping hand” in com pleting this great enterprise. One of the Attractions fn the city during the past week, was a man with an “educated” bear, which he had taught to dance, wrestle with him, Ac. He gave free “ shows,” after which he took up collections—with what success we do not know. Our opinion is that he would do better to go to work during the crop season, and probably in tbe Fall peo. pie will have money to contribute to tbe support of himself aud “ bar.” Accident to 0m. Weir Boyd. We regret to learn that this distinguish ed citizen of Lumpkin, while on bis way to White Court last week, when in about two miles of Cleveland, was thrown from his buggy, and bruised considerably, though iioMaugeruusly Injured.* " The Col. returned to his home, uot be- iug abie to attend the Court. We trust, however, he will soou bo able to resume bis professional duties. Mr. J. I. Palmer, The “ live” auctioneer, who has been in our city tor two or three months, and who mode hosts of friends here by his gentle- rnauly deportment and clever, courteous manner, returned to Augusta a week or so since, whei e he will remain duriug the Sum mer ; but we are pleased to state that it is his intention to return in the Fall and make Athens his permanent home. Liberty Lodge 458, I. 0. G. T- At a recent meeting of the above named Lodge, the following officers were elected tor the eusaing term, ending August 1st. J. C. Tabor W.C. T. Miss Lettie J. Tabor. W. The Lodge meets on Saturday before the second Sunday iu each month at 3 o’clock, P. M., and on Saturday before the luurtb Sunday at 7 o’clock, P. M. The Antecedents of Disease. Among the antecedent:* of disease are inertness iu the cir* dilution of the blood, an unnaturally attenuated condition of the uhysiqoe. Indicating that the life current is deficient in nnfntive properties, a wan, haggard look, inability to digest the food, loss of appetite, sleep and strength, and a sensa tion of unnatural languor. All these may l»e regarded »* among the indicia of approaching disease, which will even tually attack the system aud overwhelm it. if it is not built up and fortified in advance. Invigorate, then, without loss ot time, making choice of the greatest vitalizing agent extant Hostetler’s Stomach Bitters, an elixir which h:u* given hca’** and vigot to myriads of the sick and debilitated, which avouched by physicians and analysts to be pure as well effective, which is immensely popular in this country, and •xtensively used abroad, and which has been for years past me of the leading medicinal staples of America. Athens, Ga., Dec. 8,1877 A few nights since, I gave my son one dose of the Worm Oil, and the next day he passed 16 large worms. At the same time I gave one dose to my little girl, four years, aud she passed 86 worms, from 4 to 15 inches long. W. F. Phillips. The Worm Oil can be had at the New Drug Store. Decll—4t. lyDie celebrated Hodgsou Vehicles are sold cheaper than the same quality of work can be had anywhere. W. V. Hood. At Barry’s old stand, corner Broad and Jackson streets, keeps constantly on hand a most desirable stock of fancy aud family groceries, confectioneries, provisions, ker osene oil, lamp goods, Ac, which he sells at the most reasonable prices. The repressiblo” Joe Barry will be found at this establishment, where he will be pleased to see ail his friends. Frank Rhodes is also on hand, ready to wait on all customers. A Card. Messrs. Editors :—Permit me, through the colums of your valuable paper, to ex press my thanks to each and every oue who so kindly assisted me at my “ Benefit Concert,” and pre-eminently the ladies, as to their assistance the success of the Con cert was largely due. I shall always cher ish a kindly feeling for the “ Burns Silver Cornet Band,” and trust I duly appreciate the generous motives that prompted them to tender me tho compliment of a benefit. I am justly proud of the rank tho Band oc cupies iu the musical world. To the many patrons who contributed to the success of the undertaking, I will always, in the future, endeavor to merit the patronage so liberally accorded iu the past. I ha7e the honor to remain, Alfred J. Wurm. E^The more you look at it, says the St. Louis Republican, tho more certain it is that Tildeu will never get into the White House through any revengeful machina tions of tbe anti-Hayes Republicans. They don’t want to disturb Wheeler, aud will assuredly do nothiug to oust Hayes which must also oust Wheeler, while there is no Democrat in the lan([ who will do any thing to oustHayes wbIch does not ( oust Wheeler. That is tire long and short of it So if these discontented Republicans think they can delude the Democrats into ma king Wheeler President, they expect more stupidity than the most afflicted Democrat can be charged with. The Tariff Bill.—A Washington letter says: “ It is understood that there is a disposition among the friends of the Wood taritt bill to let it go over till the next ses sion in preference to pressing a final vote upon it now and running the risk of defeat. But the protection element will not ho satis fied with this, as they s iy it would be very lisastrous to business to have tho uncer tainty as to l he tariff protracted until next winter. If tho bill is to pass they say they would sooner it should pass now, and for that reason the effect of those op posed to the measure will be to force a de- sive vote upon it before the close of this session.' This deslreds no doubt prompt ed by the knowledge that a pretty thorough canvass of the House demonstrates that a majority are opposed to the bill thead wh 4- ollar at NEXT TOWN \lieid where they loan you a dollar and .-balk it down till to-morrow, for a bottle it Merrell’s Hepatiue for tbe Liver. The enormous expense of importing the ingre- lients of this great liver medicine into this country is why our Druggist, Dr. C. W. Long & Co, sells but one sample bottle to tbe same person for ten cents; but as there are fifty doses in a large size bottle, it is cheap enough attar all at two cents per dose, fur a medicine that has never been known to fail iu the cure of dyspepsia and il diseases of the liver. It has never failed in the cure of liver complaint when taken as directed, no matter of how long stand ing tbe disease. It cures Chills and Fever, Constipation of the Bowels, Dyspepsia and Liver Complaint.
