Mltfy of tbe Slre-t Cjnmj- Words with the Bark On! We Mean jut What we Say ! Ever since we have had charge of the Watchman, owing to tbe stringency money matters and other circumstances, we have indulged those who were owing ns tor subscriptions, advertising, etc., to such an extent as to make it detrimental to our business interests and really not just to our creditors, as we could not pay our debts until we could make collections. This Fail cotton has brought a better price than farmers expected, and conse quently they must have more money than usual. All are able to pay at least a por tion of what they owe, and we now ex pect them to do it. Unless they do so by tbe 1st ot March next, we shall certain ly cot their names off our books and put their accounts in the hands oi officers fer collection. We trust none will be offend ed at this, as we are only calling tor our (non, . .Senator Lamar, of Mississippi, has so far recovered from his reoent severe at' tack as to be able to go about ...It ia said that the acreage in wheat in Illinois, is 25 per cent greater this year than it was last. . .Hon. J. 55. George was last week elect ed United States Senator from Mississippi to take the place of the colored Beuatoi Bruce, from tilSt 8tato. Mr. G., of course, is a Democrat ..Tbe Louisiana Legislature last week elected K. S. Gibson United States Senator lor six years, commencing March 4,1883 .. It is stated that the Democratic Na tional Convention will probably be held at Musie Hall, in Cincinnati. ...The Republican Legislature ot Maine, on Fr dav last, under a suspension of the roles, !,.,«•!>•■ ><soluti< u amending thi Coils'itolioi . ; ov tlii g that hereafter 'lie u.ivt n or sin:. >. i circled upon s plurality, [■stead o| a Ulaje lily vote. . .Is. is said there has been quite a num- deaiha among tbe colored 31 Washdegtos, D. C.. Jan. 22d, 1880. Dear Watchman r Affairs are moving very smoothly in Washington at this time. There is but little excitement on any ques tion. The fiasco In Maine has lost its inter est. The talk about Presidential “ booms’ is growing stale, although the various can’ ■ idates on both sides are working and scheming all the time with great industry. Some of them have their agents here usu ally expert “ machine politicians,” who snow how to pull the wires. After all, the great mass of the people are far less inter ested in President-making, than are the numerous gentry who are always on the look-out for tat offices. The great Ameri can public marches steadily on, amassing property, developing the country, making America great and powerful. The chatter o! the politicians does not retard the pro gress of the nation. In the Senate, Mr. Bayard’s resolution to destroy the legal tender feature ol the greenback bill has been under discussion. There is great opposition to this measure, but many leading Democrats think that n* “ kil the principle is the only financial idea, and its author the only Presidential candidate that can lead the Democracy to victory. Mr. Bayard is a man ot unquestioned purity of character, and his advice during the extra session was wise and politic, but his financial views are unpopular with most oi the Democrats. As my province is to write the views, and not express opinions, I will express none. The House has been engaged most oi the time for several days on the discussion ot tbe question of rules. The Committee of Elections is still hard at work. Our Representative, Mr. Speer, is the third man on the Committee, and has a liberal share of the work. He has been selected, 1 believe, to make the re port of the Committee in the Mcffabe- Orih C&se, from Indiana. The brass bund bill is still exciting com ment. Gen. Johnston, oi tho Military Com mittee, will report it favorably in a short time. Mr. Bpeer, 1 learn, has received many letters lrom mlnistera of the gospel tbankiDg him for introducing this bill. When such men as Rev. Atticus G. Hay K -ixl ai d Rev Clement A. Evan* approve in-, measure, chapteiu Wills’ ntraca aeetus uM-itwe expenditure of wind. Auocta, Me., January 24.—Hie general impression is that matters are in a more critical condition than they have been for some time. Crowds are collecting at va rious points, secret clans of armed men are drilling, and other circumstances tend to create alarm. The Chronicle, green back labor organ, of Aubnrn, states that the Stats House must be taken, though it costs a thousand lives. The Government is not alarmed, and will make the State House perfectly impregnable. The first military company ever entered the State House, marched in at midnight. Pillsbury, Blood, Channing and others, are known to be enrolling in every county in the Stats. Men are collected in the county towns for J. L. Smith’s call. Captain Black, ot Augusta, is drilling men nightly. Mayor Nash has addressed the tollowiag to Gov- ernor Davis to-night “ In view ot the threatening attitude of persons hostile to the present government ot the State, I feel constrained to asy to your Excellency, that I tear my civil police fori e will be unable to sufficiently protect tbe pit:. property at the oapitel, or even hold iKi.-eei.toii of the building itself, again*- seen a force as the public enemies seem to be willing and able to bring again-t it." Fr.-m consultation with th’ military au thorities, Governor Davis became thor oughiy convinced of the nvrousuesa of the simatiou, and that the petition of Mayor Mash is perfectly sound. He therefore or dered to tbe State House the Capital Guards and the Richmond Light Infantry, who, at one o’clock, *. m., were there. The Auburn Light Infantry Will'leave that place for the capital at 2 o’clock this loom ing, and other military forces will he brought if necessary. Hie information ot the operations of the ftisionlsta comes from reliable men in each county. Hie design is to take the House, PiUabury*B last hope. It ia hoped the prompt action of Governor Davis will avoid trouble. Xanare known to be ready at the call of Smith, in Lincoln and Somerset counties, who are to sleighs across tbe oountty. The prompt action of Colonel Peakes prevented the movement in Picataqua county. AD the armories in the State are under guard.
