BUYING VOTE9!
<“ - ) V 1
We have written much already on
tills subject, but it is a curse bequeath*
oil us with universal suffrage that la-
creases with each campaign. We do
uot know what man or party first in*
traduced the pernicious custom of
buying up the colored vote—but one
thing is certain: nowhere on the
globe can it be more openly practiced
than in the oity of Athens. There are
regular agencies-established in our
midjV for suffrage-brokerage, and a
candidate had as well make up his
mind to accept overwhelming defeat
or contribute to this organized system
of blackmail. In fact, buying and
selling votes has almost become legal
ized by custom. Of course we all know
that the statutes of our State forbid
tills; and we will also agree that a
man who is so debased as to barter
this privilege should be eternally dis
franchised. But in the face of these
fuets tills outrage on public liberty has
been tolerated for years, and being
unrebuked grows in boldness and au
dacity. A poor man in Athens has
no earthly chance for promotion un
less he is backed by monied friends.
In fact, we are now living under the
most arbitrary power, upheld by an
of ignorant, unscrupulousanddebased
element. The whites seem to have
meekly retired from the political are
na, and leave the selection of offices
entirely with the blacks. The negroes
have been divided by the silver lever,
and by uniting on some worthy man
the whites could easily achieve victo
ry and at the same time overthrew
this monied dynasty. We have talk
ed to both Independents and Organi
zed Democrats, and they express a
willingness to unite against this com
mon enemy to popular liberty. There
is yet nnother way to break up suf
frage bartering: Bet our next grand
jury take the matter in hand, and by
a thorough and sweeping investiga
tion unearth this bribery and corrup
tion and turn the participants over to
the tender mercies of an outraged law
There will be but little trouble in get
ting all the evidence necessary, as
these suflrage-sellers haw grown bold
by so long being countenanced. Our
people expect this work of their grand
jury, and look to them for redress
from an outrageous evil. It Is as much
for the protection of candidates as the
protection of tlie country from this
liourdc of unscrupulous voters that
we demand this. It is an outrage that
n man should ho taxed the worth of
an office, and then grovel in the dust
of humiliation, insecure it. We refer
to no individual, but simply state
what every man in Athens knows to
lie true. And right here let us say a
word to those voters who have thus
bartered the highest privilege accord
ed a free American citizen for a filthy
mess of pottage: You not only debase
the confidence this government repo
sed in you, but you imperil the con
tinuance of that suffVage. The Re
publican parly secs thatitcan no lon
ger use your power in the South] and
would to-day consent to wrest the bal
lot from your hands in order to lessen
Southern representa.tion in Congress.
The Democrats stand between you
tills. Now don’t you know that when
the intelligent white people of the
country see that you cannot bo vest
ed with tliis right, nnd is unworthy of
the high trust, that they will rise in
their might and wrest it from you!
Our government is upheld by the bal
lot ; but both the national and State
laws forbid you selling that right and
prescribe heavy penalties. The rival
parties may clash on certain issues,
but they unite in their contempt fora
man who sells his birthright. We
can respect a colored man who votes
any ticket of his free choice, be it Re
publican or Democratic; but when he
sells his voto for money or a drink of
whisky, we feel for him the sickening
contempt of a traitorous reptile.
AFRICANIZING GEORGIA.
Our jieople sustain Mr. Hill in his
declaration that the mission of Dr.
Ft 1.ton's new party is to Africanize
the Plate—at least to continue the
work already begun by the Indepen
dent party. We have but to digest
the Doctor's Augusta oration to be
convinced of this fact. His attack up
on our present penitentiary system is
but a bid lor the negro vote; and when
lie proposes to abolish the poll tax it
is with a view of annihilating the on
ly safeguard thrown around our ballot
box. This new reformer well knows
that his party would go to pieces if
left to the discerning intelligence of
the whites, and lienee ids attempt to
uphold It by drawing upon the igno
rance and crime of the State for re
cruits. It would indeed be a sad day
for Georgia if this (ripple alliance be
tween Independents, Radicals and
disappointed office-seekers should be
victorious! Our people would find
themselves powerless and at the mer
cy and domination of their old ene
mies. Dike unto our own district we
will see worthy and honorable white
men east out of high and responsible
offices to make room for influential
negroes! A Democrat would havo no
* right that these interlopers would feel
themselves bound to respect. We will
see a reign of negro supremacy beBide
which Bullock’s reign would shine
as a gem of purity. It would eternal
ly crush Democratic chance of nation
al success, and prove the death-knell
to our cherished Southern institu
tions. But we have little fear of
the issue. It will need Bueh a warn
ing ns this to bring the Democracy of
Georgia again together. Those Inde*
pendent sons have not strayed so far
from the fold but what they can again
be rallied to avert a common danger.
They will not lend their aid to a lot of
greedy office-seekers to Aflrlcanlse—
aye, Radicalise their State. When
Dr. Obr was removed from the Ath
ens post-office simply because he would
not" bend the servile knee that thrift
might follow fawning," and a colored
man installed In his stead, the so-
called Independent party was
doomed in the Otli district. While
out people do not object to the colored
