jones and Garfield.
J. Jt. It. in Chronicle and- ConatiluUonatiaL
I have had some conversation with
Senator Jones, of Nevada, and infer
from his undisguised language that
he not only will adhere to what he
spoke in the Senate, but, if anything,
make it stronger. He openly pro
claims that the whole negro business
is a melancholy blunder; that it ap
proaches crime; and he regrets that
some of the New Kngland gentry did
not debate the question with him. “I
believe,” he said, “that what General
Wigfall declared is true. The Yankee;
sold their slav-s to the South for the
love of money, and stole them back
again for the love of God.” He also
wants it understood that he is a pro
gressive man; and that, having dis
covered ti»e evil of negro suffrage,
there is nothing to do but to honestly
confess the folly of the act and seek
such remedy as the law allows. No
man in Washington is more outspok
en on this subject than .the Republi
can Senator from Nevada and the bo
som friend of President Arthur. Thi“
extraordinary Senator is another
proof of what I alluded to in a recept
letter. Like Senator Lamar, he is not
often in his seat and makes very few
speeches. Rut what he does is the
very best of the kind and gives him
national fame; while several Sena
tors, who are eternally twaddling,
clear tile galleries as well as the Sen
ate floor.
I asked a distinguished public man,
who knew Gnrfteld long and well,
what lie thought|of recent revelations.
His answer was that no public man
had fallen so swiftly and so abysmally
as the lute President, in reputation.
His character had been exalted to the
skies, one day, and dashed to pieces
the next day. The proof of double-
dealing, furnished by his own record,
now exposed to the world, was con-
elusive. As always happens in such
eases, evidence hitherto suppressed
is eagerly sought and made cumula
tive. For example, it Is now stated
that Judge Jere Black, when asked by
a lady if Garflcld was a wolf in sheep’s
clothing, promptly answered: “No,
madam ; lie is a sheep in wolf’s cloth
ing!” A Southern Senator, well
known to our Georgia people, declares
that, last spring, lie went to Garfleid,
during the deadlock, and asked him
why it wns not broken. The Presi
dent replied: “I do not countenance
it, and will break it this week.” Re
turning to the Capitol, the Southern
liemoerat met a Republican Senator
and told him what had occurred. The
Republican was amazed, and thus re
plied: “Why, lie told me just the re

Mete Green, not long since while
out witli his cuttle, made a most start
ling discovery and one that may pos
sibly take its place among the grand
wonders of Itiulio. He was riding
along early in the morning on the di
vide between Indian Creek anti Snake
River, when ids horse sprang aside,
snorted, and otherwise gave ei idence
of having seen or heard something
unusunl. The spot wns on a little
knoll on the comb of the ridge, and
Mete, wlui lind been almost asleep,
taking a sweep around with his eyes
to learn tile cause of his horse's behav
ior, filially rested his vision on wliut
seemed to be a hole in the ground a
few paces distant. Dismounting he
was soon looking into a funnel-shaped
orifice fifteen or twenty feet deep by
ten or twelve at its rim in diameter.
At the bottom of tlds funnel—the soil
giving out there—was a rift in the
rook two or three feet ill width by four
or five in length, which seemed to
open into the very bowels of the earth.
Through this a|>erture came up from
tlie depths below a terrible roaring, as
if a leaping cataract, u mighty rush
of waters, rumbling over rocks. The
ground trembled, and the subterrane
an noise continued uninterruptedly.
Mete remained some time, and the
longer he listened the more convinced
he became that what he heard was
running water, but how far down to
the stream he could not even conjec
ture—it might have been a few feet or
half way to China.. And as the fissure
was large enough to take him .in
should his foot slip or -‘head swltn,
ids observation was not an extended
one.” The principal thing he did
while there was to listen low and
strong and think loud—at a safe dis
tance from the brink of the hole.

assailed in so sudden a manner that they

while one had two wounds in his head

well armed witli muskets and toma

but sometime afterward a seareli party
was sent from tlie scooner, and pushed
their way to the village in the bush.
Tlie sight which met their eyes was
shocking to behold. Tlie village was
deserted, tlie natives leaving behind
them a hand, a thigh, portions of a

the remaius of the former comrades of

scraped and ready for cooking. A)1 the
human remains found wore collected aud
burned. There was not the slightest
doubt in tlie minds of the Searchers that
the remainder of the bodies had been
eaten by the Santo Island natives,
who are knowu to be cannibals. Capt.
Hawkins has received the full particu

not the slightest provocation was given
to the islanders to commit the' outrage.
As soon as possible after the sad affair
Capt. Hawkins proceeded to Fiji to re

Editor Banxxb-Watcbmax :—Will
you please make the effort to explain
the difference between a stalwart radical

a stalwart in office, and of so-called
organized democrats who sustain such
stalwart radical appointment by going
upon their bonda? Subtle conundrums
but then we are accustomed to such
things. No hair-splitting desired.
