citizens on Nebntftku avenue, and
ufler committing several small thefts
entered the sleeping apartment of a
highly reapeetable younjr lady and
made a diaboliea'I attempt at rape.
Kniling in hi* fiendish attempt, the
villian then tried to cover up Ids hel
lish crime with a lesser one—murder.
He stabbed the helpless ami prostrate
jiirl several times with a I it roe bowie-
knife and then made Rood his escape,
leaving Itis victim in a fainting and
almost dyiiiK condition. The neigh
bors were at once summoned and a
seareli was Ik-kuii at once.
For fear of exciting the community,
tlie matter was kept a profound secret
and only the otlieers of the law and a
few immediate friends knew any
thing about tlie ease until tlie scoun
drel was locked safely in jail.
Tbe sheriff and a posse started in
pursuit about ten o’clock yesterday. I or Kit e away
They Rot a clue and followed it up,
and at 1U o'clock they overtook Ov
ens beyond Krause’s Spring, and af
ter a slight resistance captured him.
Owens acknowledged to beingln tbe
house Sunday night; but he said he
only intended robbery. Afterwards'he
said he thought of rape, amt then said
lie ought to have murdered tlie girl
and hushed tlie matter up.
He appeared to take tlie entire mat
ter as a huge joke from tlie time he
was arrested. D> coming baek to town,
as he crossed the river, lie threw u
package overboard. He was placed in
jail about one •‘eloek. In tlie mean
time the news of tlie intended rape
had got wind and spread, and by tlie
time tlie prisoner was safely behind
the bars, tlie people had about deter
mined to take tlie law in their own
bunds. In an hour’s time an immense
crowd had gathered and a vote was
called, ami all who favored taking
Owens out and hanging him to utree,
were asked to step out. Then about
*) men volunteered to go up to the
sheriffs house and get tlie jail keys.
1 am sure that Mr. Cruft did not think
for a moment that the crowd intruded
harm. When tlie mob entered the
sheriffs bouse lie was at dinner. As
lie rose from tlie table a dozen pair of
hands grabbed him, and before he
knew what he was about, his keys
were gone and the mob with them.
Tlie infuriated mob pushed on toward
the jail. - In tlie meantime the mob
was growing larger every moment.
The jail door was unlocked and the
prisoner was taken out. He was the
most unconcerned and indifferent per
son present. He said, "‘Oh, you all
can’t bulldoze me; I will have a
trial.” Then he was hurried across
the court bouse yard and then across
the street under a large shade tree. A
ro|>e was passed over u limb; a noose
made, and his hands were tied. Now,
for the first time, the miserable wretch
realized Itis fate. Dvfore, lie did not
know what to think. I am sure lie
had no idea of being hung. As soon
ns lie saw that the mob was in earnest,
lie denied the crime and begged for
bis life. He snhl lie would go to prison
for life if only mercy was shown him.
He bogged for a trial, and tlie grimest
reply was given hint lever heard:
"Yes, we will give you a trial, but we
will hang you first and give you a trial
afterwards."
Lieutenant Danes, of the 3d nrtilery
arrived on tlie ground, and ns soon us
lie saw how matters stood he called
tlie garrison to arms to rescue the
prisoner. The sheriff lmd come down
and tlie mayor of tlie town were now
licgging for tlie prisoner’s life. Tlie
poor friendless wretch saw that if he
could only prolong ids life for a few
minutes, the troops in tlie garrison
would rescue him. How lie fought,
how lie ealletl on tlie crowd to help
him, lmt in vain. Tlie fair face of his
intended victim was uppermost in the
minds of tlie maddened throng. As
soon as the feet and hands of the
doomed man were tied, a dray was
driven under tlie tree and Owens
placed thereon. When the dray mov
ed otl the prisoner fell to the ground.
Tlie military were exjieeted every mo
ment, and now the mob must work
quick. So u half dozen ready hands
laid hold the rope anti-drew the body
of C. D. Owens up. There in the pub
lic street, out in front of the hall of
justiee, court sitting from day to day,
there tlie body hung till sunset. The
crowd slowly dispersed, the military
did not come, anti human vengeance
was visited swiftly on this wretened
man. May the God he has gone to
meet have more mercy on him than
did his fellow men.
