MR SPEER'S RECORD.
Some of thin gentleman’s especial
friends and admirers seem to be anx-
ous to know what act of his we And
fuult with as a representative of the
people of this district, elected as, and
claiming to be a Democrat. If they
will take the trouble to examine his
votes on the question of tacking riders
on appropriation bills, we are Inclined
to tlis opinion that lie will be (bind
in tlis very ixtsom of the Republican
fold. But there is one act of his which
lie lias not denied, and cannot deny,
that settled the question with many
of his former supporters. This was
ids refusal to go into the Democratic
caucus. A man who was elected as a
Democrat, and was voted for by Dem
ocrats upon his distinct and oft re
peated assurance that he was as good
u Democrat as his opponent, has no
right to refuse to be bound by party
ties and party caucuses. What we
want in Congress from the Ninth Dis
trict, is one who will stick to his De
mocracy through thick andlhin.
Mr. Speer by his refusal to go into
the caucus says that he will vote with
the Democrats when it suits him and
when it don’t he won’t. That is not
what we want and it is not what we
hud fi right to expect. There are five
thousand Democrats in the Ninth dis
trict who voted for Mr. Speer last
time undr the firm belief that when
lie got to Washington lie would be as
good a Democrat as Mr. Bell would.
They belived that he would take bis
place in line and never be found
wanting or draging. To these his de
fection lias liecu a source of mortifica
tion and regret. What is the Demo
cratic caucus practically? It is the
combined experience, skill, wisdom,
statesmanship and patriotism of all
tile Democratic mein hers brought to
gether for consultation. If he sup-
poses that his single judgment is bet
ter than all theirs, we beg to differ
with him, or prefer to be represented
by a steady going,unswerving T ' mo-
ciat who is not too big for his breech
es and wiic is willing to advise with
and lie advised by the Democrats.
THE MARKHAM HOUSE R1NO.
The Atlanta Post-Appeal thinks the
Banner - Watchman “shows as
much ignorance as stupidity” in its
comments upon the late Markham
House jamboree. Well, we do not
see where there is a display for any
great degree of enlightenment or wis
dom on the subject. The whole aflTalr
was shrouded in mystery, and the
only knowledge the public had of the
meeting was a long-winded platform
signed by men who, (with one excep
tion), have no n
leadership over a people" than the
most stupid body of politicians that
ever met in some mountain district to
nominate a candidate for constable.
Every man in that so-called conven
tion was an Independent, and the ma
jority disappointed office-seekers or
incipient pap-suckers, who hoped
by exploding this new boomsbell to
route the Democratic party, when
they might come in for a share of the
spoils with the victorious Republicans
—which recognition of their Imagina
ry talent and service an intelligent
public has heretofore withheld from
them. But their new political boom
went out with a sizzle, and the par
ticipants are now knawing on the and
of disappointed expectations. Iii fact,
that convention came too close upon
the heels of Dr. Felton’s late Radi-
ical alliance for the people to be de
ceived with the sugar-coated pill.
The Doctor is leading his trumps en
tirely too fast to enable him to dis
guise his hand. The people have
looked over his shoulder and see that
lie has up his sleeve a Republican
yerker, and that he is playing his hand
to that end. Any sensible man who
will look at the calibre of that Mark
ham House crew will find that its
new platform is solely based on a ra
pacious greed for office, with the end
in view to weaken the Democratic
party that the Republieans may again
come into power, and the members of
this secret convention be wafted into
office with the political revolution in
our State government. If the editor
of the Post-Appeal can in any way
further enlighten us on the subject
we will be glad to hear from him.
You may talk about Democratic ring
rule; but can it begin to compare with
the action of a secret body of men,
who meet with closed doors and re
fuse to publish their full proceedings,
and then try to force a platform of
their own manufacture on an intell!
gent people.
