Cotton has been languid, prices remain nearly stationary, and may still be quoted at f. 190 to 230, for Upland, and f.310 to 330 for Sea-Island,.in entrepot. We are confirmed in the opinion that high prices will be maintained here, if the crop proves short with you, partic ularly for good qualities In consequence of some amelioration in our water carriage to Ly ons, by the Garonne, canal of l ar.guedoc, and the Rhone, we expect to supply that city and Switzerland with larger quantities of cotton than we have hitherto done. ltice continues very scarce, and sells in small quantities at f.50, but it is becoming rather hea vy in die north. Our stock of Tobacco has increased to 1500 hluls. of which 4LtO are Virginia, 400 Carolina & Georgia, and 70U Kentucky, and further supplies are expected. Some of the holders are becom ing very anxious to realize their parcels ; and good Kentucky might be obtained at f 65 if not at 60. The Requ’ have fixed the 6th Nov. for their next purchase day but we fear their wants are limited, anct we know that the competition will be great, from which circumstance it is nat ural to calculate,, th it the sales which take place, will be at reduced prices. American Flour is nominal atfsotos2. Colonial produce has not fluctuated since cur last advices. St. Domingo and Spanish Coffee is worth from f.l 7A to 1 15. White clayed Ha vana Sugars f.70 to 85 —brown do. f.6u to 65 Muscovadoei f.50 to 68. Pepper has advanced to f.l for light, and.l 10 for heavy. Our Vintage has commenced, anil its produce will fall short of our thost reduced calculations; the discouraging prospect lias not how-ever pre vented some depression in Brandy, which was driven up to unprecedented prices by specula tion. Needy holders being obliged to realize. 4th proof Armagnftcs might be put on board at’ f.875, but there is a girater probability of its ri sing again, than of a further diminution. The new \\ ines will command extravagant prices altho’ the qualities are not likely to prove as good as was expected., from the favourable tem perature of our summer. Exchange on London f.23 85 to 80,” Military Movements,—We have it from the best authority, that all the disposable force on the sda-board of North Carolina, Sruth Carolina, and Georgia, under the command of colonel Bankhead, are order ed to rendezvous forthwith at some point on the St. Mary’s river. Rumour gives to this movement, two objects—first, that the Expedition is to join gen. Gaines, who is go ing against the Sdminoles ; and second, that its destination is against Amelia Isl - and. Tjfis latter opinion, (being grounded Upon th^ supposition that the Floridas have been ceded by Spain to this country,) is most prevalent. Ch. Gaz. Ehom the Baltimore Patriot, Nov. 16. Trouble in Algiers. —Capt Moody, of the brig Abioara, arrived at this port from Gib ratyer, from whence he sailed on the sth of October, states that the day before be left, ir/formation was received that a revolution had taken place at Algiers, that the Dey Aad been deposed; and, together with his /prime minister, had beeu decapitated ; and that a merchant there of ordinary stand ing, had been chosen to fill his place. The plague still raged at Algiers with Considerable violence. The American squadron arrived at Gib raltar on the Ist October, in 14 days from the coast of Algieis. Prices at Richmond, Nov. 14.—Tobac co R 7 a 11, Corn 4 a 4 1-2* Flour 8 1-2 a 8 3-4, Wheat 1 67, Meal 1 17, Hemp 100 a 140. Despatches have been received frm Gen. Mina dated in August, from the interior of Mexico; he had been joined by the revolu tionary forces under Entire Torre, and his disciplined force already ammounts to 6000 men. Phil. Jlurora. A New-Orleans editor, who had sus pended flu: publication of his pa|x*r on account of the sickness, re-commenced his duties on the 24th of September, re marking that the north wind) that grand: phy.-icisii, had begun to blow', the weather j twrnoitf cooler, the fever appeared toJ r dt* ‘**l tMumedj Mw Invention.—We have seen the mo del of anew invented double marine lever, for raising ships of the line and other ves sels out of water, on very simple, and, ap parently, efficacious principles, and fixing them in a position to fie coppered and re paired, with great ease and economy. The increase of our navy renders it necessary to suggest some new improvement by which ships can be repaired w ith facility, and a diminution of labor. Tins machine will prevent the necessity of dry docks, which not only are enormously expensive, but from the want of sufficient water in the eb bing and flowing of the tide* in some of our principal naval depots, would be difficult to erect. If the machine can be constructed sufficiently strong and durable, we see no other objection to its utility. The model is in the possesrion of the inventor, capt. Alexander Coffin, and can be 9een by call ing at the office in the state prison. J\‘. Y. Advocate. The heavy rains, (says the Ontario Mes senger of Nov. 4th) which we have experi enced during the past week, have swelled the waters of our creeks and rivers to an unusual and dangerous height; several bridges and mill dams have been carried away, and it is feared others will share a similar disaster. The roads are inundated and travelling rendered very tardy and un pleasant. Such a .freshet has not been known for 15 years. From the Onondago Register of the sth Inst. Great Freshet. —We had an unusual fall of rain in this vicinity on Friday and Sat urday of last week. The creek, running through this village, was raised much high er than for several years before, inundating a large portion of the flats, and rendering the road almost impassable for some dis tance. We apprehend considerable dam age has been sustained, although as yet we have heard of none, other than the destruc tion of fences, &c. From the Ontario Messenger. British manufacturers outdone in Onta rio.—Much has been said, and many ac counts published of the celerity with which english manufacturers of cloth have gone through the various operations atten dant on the manufacturing that article, from the fleece to the garment. A few weeks since we published an article from an english paper, in which it was stated that at one of the manufactories in En gland, the fleece had been taken from the sheep and’ Manufactured into a coat in the short space of 13 hours and twertty min utes. —Messrs Buck, Brewster & co. man agers cf the Ontario manufactory at Man chester in this country, on perusing that article became sensible, from the perfection of their machinery and the dexterity of their workmen, that the same operations might be accomplish even in a shorter time. Immediately a wager of 500 dollars was of fered, and accepted by the managers, that they would perform the same operation in 12 hours. The wool was taken from the sack in its natural state, and in 9 hours and 15 minutes precisely, the coat wa3 com pleted and worn by one of the parties con cerned. The wool was picked, greased, carded, roped and spun—the yarn was warped; put into the loom and woven—the cloth was fulled, colored, four times shorn, pressed and carried to the tailors, and the coat completed, all within the time above stated. We saw the coat the next day af ter it was made. The cloth was not of the finest texture, but was very handsomely dressed, and fitted the person remarkably well. The truth of the above statement can be attested by many respectablewitnes ses besides messrs. Buck and Brewster.— The only difference between this and the English experiment is the time occupied in shearing the fleece, and any farmer in the country knows that that operation may be despatched in ten minutes. The above named gentlemen now confidently assert, that they can manufacture a coat of ele gant superfine broadcloth, and have it com plete in 12 hours. HALIFAX, OCT. 29. About 9 o’clock on Wednesday evening last, 11. M. S. Forth, capt. sir John Louis, bt. from Portsmouth and Madeira, unfortu nately struck upon Trumtrap Shoals, where she lay notwithstanding every assistance that could be given, until Thursday about half past 11 o’clock A. Tombs: Wednesday, 19th Nov. 1817, at 7 o’clock in the morning, vjhile running along the Nerth- Carolina shore between the Curituck and Roa noke inlets, wej saw a ship ashore with her top sails and courses partly clewed up ; we then kept close in sh|>re to ascertain whether she had any signal for assistance; we saw the sea break ing oyer her stern and they shew no signal, and a number of people on shore near her which we supposed went trom the ship, which led us to believe that they had put part of the crew and passengers ashore, is we only saw four people on board. We had passed the ship Voucher but a little while before we saw a boat ahead of our ship, about five miles from the wreck ; we soon came to her; and took them in,(three in number) they kail been ordered .to lay by the ship to take the captain and rest ot the crew out, but having aker of gin in their boat, they were not capable of going back to the wreck ; we learned from them, that the ship was the \ ouch er, captain Howland from New-York, bound to Charleston, and that heir long-boat had gone to leeward to land tVe ] assengers. W e filled away immediately, in no; es of ..finding them ; after running about five m les further we saw the boat, steered for her anwtook her along side, when we found six womfn, four children, (ail girl?) and five passengers, with the chief mate, two men andu boy, (say nineteen in num ber,) after we got ihem all safe on board and fed the mate and pen, 1 wished the mate to take a boat’s crew ftrid return to the wreck to save the rest of th lives if possible ; he would go, but the seamen refused : we then took in our boat and proceeded on our voyage.
