The following Circular, handed us by one of ‘oiir commercial friends„furnishes, we believe, a correct state of the French markets: \ “BORDEAUX, 9th OCT. ‘ “I profit of the departure of our friend capt. W 3 ALGERINE fIRA TEB. It will be perceived, bn a perusal of the following article, translated from a Ham burg paper, that the consuls of Great Brit ain, the Netherlands, prance and Spain sanction the indiscriminate plunder of commerce of the wUld, by the bar bary corsairs. The knowledge of this fact cannot but excite astonishment, when we reflect that, a few months ago, England sent a powerful fleet to subdue, those unprinci pled freebooters. In that dreadful conflict she lost hundreds of lives), and spent an immense sum of money —for what ? Why, as the event proves, after patching up a lame arid impotent peace, to give these vile and unprincipled robbers official authority again to commence their depredations up on the highway of nations. The public will recollect reading, some time since, in the extracts flour London papers, the account of the capture and re capture of the Russian ship Industry; but the English editors took special care to conceal from the world thispiYt of the in formation connected with that recital. HAMBURG, 13th auo. 1817* A letter from the heroic captain Schu mann, of the Riissian ship Industry, dated Lisbon,* 17th July, mentions the fallowing particulars concernig the capture Sand re taking of bis vessel. The Algerine! corsair ors, and Wiled in the English language the said captain, ordering him to come on board. This was on the 3d of July, at meridian, and in sight'of cape Fimlterre. The captain, not suspecting the brigto be an Algerine cruiser, want on board in his boat. When he got on board he produced his papers, to which no attention was paid, % Turkish pass being wanted, and yfcssel and cargo declared a lawful prize—eleven men. armed with muskets, pistols and sa bres, were put on board the ship, and five of the crew taken out; among which were the; mate, two natives of Russia, and an adopted boy of the captain’s, and carried onboard the pirate, where they no dotobt now experience the hard fate of slavery. As soon as the pirates had get-possession of the ship, they confined the captain and the five remaining seamen to the cabin, placing at the door a sentry with a drawn sabre. They bore away for Algiers, and on the 4th of July passed Porto. Thus situated, capt. Schumann proposed to his men to attempt, even at-the risk of their lives, to retake the vessel; and fiqding them ready, they on the sth July made a desperate attack upon the Turks, and after one hour’s- hard fighting, succeeded in kil ling every one of them : their bodies were thrown overboard. In this unequal con test, capt. S. received a wound on the head, one in the thigh, and another on his arm— his crew escaped unhurt. After the re taking of the ship, another corsair* hove in sight, by whom they were fortunately pas sed without being noticed. On the 7th July they arrived safely at Lisbon. Among the papers, found upon the bodies of these pirates, were passports of the con suls of Great Britain, the Netherlands, France, and Spain., residing in Algiers, di recting the commanders of vessels of war belonging to their respective nations } nei ther to detain qr molest ALGERINE .Cruisers or any of their prizes ! i Abraham G.
