may be done with perfect safety, is equal
ly the duty of their representatives. In j
this instance vve have the satisfaction to
know that they were imposed when the de
mand was imperious, and have been sus
tained with exemplary fidelity. I have to
add, that, however gratifying it may be to
me, regarding the prosperous and happy
condition of our country, to recommend the
repeal of these taxes at this time,l shall n ev
trtheless be attentive to events, and, should
any future emergency occur, be not less
prompt to suggest such measurers and bur
thens, as may then be requisite and proper.

at Woodstock, week before last, Samuel E.
Godfrey, was the third time tried for the
murder of Thomas Hewlett, and the third
time the jury brought i.t a verdict —guilty.

Friday in February next.
A valuable merchant mill, near this
place, belonging to general Wade Hamp
ton, containing upwards of 200 bales of cot
ton, was on Tuesday l.;st destroyed by fire,

accident or design i- not known. General
Hampton’s loss in inis instance cannot be

or vellow complected fellow named BUTLER,
about 24 vears of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high,
stout limbed, likely, and very civil when spoken
to, and generally so with his companions ; very
capable of all kinds, of plantation work, and han
dy with carpenters’ tools, is a good driver of
horses, and a complete maker and burner of
bricks; sensible and smart; had on when ho
went off, a large white hat with broad brim,
round-about jacket and trousers of bearskin
cloth, and absconded on tile night of the Bth O.
tober. The above reward will be given, ands
