WASHINGTON, JULY 14.
The president of the United States re
turned to this city this morning from his
farm in Loudon county, Virginia.
It is believed that gen. Jackson's des
patches, and the communications from the
South American commissioners, were sub
mitted to the cabinet, which met soon after
the arrival of the president.
Interesting state of affairs. —If we were
to form any opinion of our affairs at this
moment, we might conjecture, that in two
or three departments of the general gov
ernment, business of moment was under
consideration. There are at thij time pre
sent at the seat of government:
His excellency James Monroe, president of the
United States.
The lion. John Q. Adams, secretary of state,
Wm. H. Crawford, scc’ry. oftrea’y.
Jons C. Calhoun, secretary of war.
His Excel. Htde De Neuyille, from France.
Charles BAGOT.from Great-Britain.
Luis De from Spain.
J. W. Ten Cate, from Holland.

CHARLESTON, JULY 23. $
From St. Mary's. —By the arrival of the
Driver, we learn that the small privateer
or piratical schr. lately scuttled and sunk
in Jekyl sound had been raised and carried
into St. Mary's. She is ascertained to have
had no interest in or connection with the
other schr. which was recently sunk in
that vicinity.
The circumstances under which the lat
ter vessel was sunk, are somewhat myste
rious. It seems a strange boat with muffled
■oars, arrived :>t St. Mary’s one night last
week, and was detained by the gun boat.
Iler crew represented themselves to have
belonged to a schooner, prize to an inde
pendent privateer, which that afternoon
had been upset in a squall and sunk ; but
a written paper was afterwards discovered
in the bottom of the boat, giving a particu
lar description of the vessel’s situation, the
depth of water she was in, her bearings &c.
which induced the suspicion of her havinsr
been sunk intentionally, and that she was
afterwards to be raised. The tops of her
masts were out of water, and upon one of
them a small signal. She was reported to
be a Spanish vessel, but from various cir
cumstances she is believed to be a Swede
or Dane, reported to have 40.000 specie
dollars on board, and a cargo of silks, &c.
worth 7000 dollars. This mystery will
probably soon be cleared up, as the U. S.
brio; Saranac was to have sailed from St.
Mary’s on Tuesday morning to jo'n the U.
S. schr. Lynx, when she would be easily
raised though in seven fathoms water.
GALLJIXT EXPLOIT.
Caj>. James Tyrner, of Buckspost, (Me.)
in the schr. “Eight Sisters,” having 100
quintals of codlish on board, was taken by
the British sloop of war Wye, capt. J. Har
per, while fishing off Bryer island, (Nova
Scotia) on the 15th of June last. The
crew were put on board the Wye, but the
captain was left on board the schooner,
which was carried into Digby. After ly
ing there 12 days, one Thomas Sadler,
prize-master, and three British seamen
were ordered on board, and proceeded with
the schooner towards Halifax. On,the
night of the 28th of June, Capt. Turner
carefully secured the lire-arms and cutlas
ses to his own use< while the prize-master
and one other man were asleep—fastened
them below, without being discovered, and
then took a pistol in each hand, and gave
his orders to the two on deck, who obeyed);
he arrived near Macliias on the day follow
ing, and landed the prize-master and one
man ; and again set sail, and arrived at
Bucksport on the 3d of July, in triumph.
1 certify the above to be true.

NORFOLK, JULY 15.
A gentleman, who came passenger in the
schr.Jlummivg-bird, from New-orleans, in
forms, that place very healthy at the
time of their leaving it; but few vessels
were there, and they were all taken up ;
they met at the Bali'ze, however, 18 sail,
principally square-rigged, bound up. While
the Humming-Bird was on her way down
the Mississippi, an attempt was made to
board her by an open row boat, belonging
to one Mitchell, who, it was understood,
owned three or four of that description,
and that some Spanish vessels had been
plundered by him. On coming along side
the Humming-Bird, the pirates were in
formed that if they attempted to board they
would be lired into, as preparations had
been made to repeal them. They took the
hint accordingly and sheered off.
Thepilot who carried the brig Jllknomaclc
to sea, bound for Jamaica, returned here on
Monday, and informs, that he left the brig
on Tuesday last, in a bay boat; that short
ly after the boat fell in with a privateer
brig under Buenos Ayrean colors, which
took him and the bay pilot on board to car
ry her up the bay. There were no officers
on board the brig except the boatswain,
who officiated as the commander. The
crew stated that they had some time before,
rison upon their officers and confined them,
and given the command of the brig to the
boatswain ; that they steered for the West
indies and put the officers ashore on an isl
and, and took a certificate from them of
their having been put on shore, which cer
tificate they exhibited to the pilots, probably
wi{h a view to convince them that they had
not added Murder to mutiny. Having
thus disposed of their officers, they next
steered For the Chesapeak, where having
taken a bay pilot on board, as before obser
ved, they stated it to be their intention to
proceed up the bay. On their way up they
kept the brig very close in shore on the
western side, and landed at three different
times 23 of their men. In the mouth of
Severn river they came toanchorand smug
gled ashore a number of articles, which they
sold ; among other things, they sent ashore
about 80 bbl. ofirish pork and beef, and
sold the former at gl2 per bbl. The pilot
is unable to say how long she remained at
this anchorage, having left her while thfere :
but understood from the crew that they in
tended, after selling out every thing on
board, to get upas near to Baltimore as
they could, and run the brig on shore ; af
ter which they would leave her, and dis
perse themselves. They had a vast deal of
money amongst them, which had been ac
cumulated from various prizes, and the
men who were put on shore carried with
them as much specie as they knew what to
do with. The pilot could not find out the
name of the brig, and does not recollect
any of the names of those on board, or of
tiie officers who were left in the West-in

AGRICULTURAL.
There is now growing on the farm of E.
S. Thomas, esq. of Baltimore coutitv, a lit
tle patch ot rye, of a singularly beatiful and
interesting appearance. It is a part of the
product of four grains that were received
a few years ago in a letter from near the
head of the Mediterranean sea, by a gentle
man of New-england. The peculiar char
acteristics of this grain are stated to be in
the superior quantity and quality of the
crop. The stalk is uncommonly strong,
as indeed it needs must be, to support the
very heavy head that it bears—which is
bearded, and until fairly formed, bent com
pletely over, and held by the beard to the
stalk. The grain is represented to be
nearly half an inch long and of a bright
yellow color. The pods in which it is en
closed are more than an inch in length, and
exceedingly numerous. It was sowed on
the 25th of March last, and promises to
become an invaluable resource against the
effects of our winter frosts &c. I am no
judge of these things, but never beheld a
growing vegetable that pleased me more,
than this luxuriant rye. Adjacent ‘to it
also is a beautiful patch of wheat, the pro
duct of a pint of very fine grain that grew
last year in European Turkey, which pro
mises to be an equally valuable acquisition
being heavy and light colored. It was al
so aowed on the 25th of March. Gentle
men who introduce and encourage such
things ought to he considered public bene
factor*. Xilen'i Register.
