December 8. The Theatre has been open
three nights, and 1 am gratified to say that the
company has given but little room for criticism.
The characters, are generally, well supported,
and the performers far above mediocrity. Emu
lation is so conspicuous, that it would be unjust
to particularize. That their efforts have been
well received, is evidenced by clouded houses
every night The greatest open for remarks, is
against t lie fashionable bonnets. Ladies on the
second seats are privileged to complain ; but the
gentlemen arc obliged to be silent, in the play
house ; though they are licensed to give hints
through the medium of the press. More of this
hereafter, if necessary.
hern:the ■ 9:’ Attended the Theatre again
la-t night—Richard the third performed—char
acters well sustained—particularly Richard.
Boxes ci oudcci, as usual—took my station—view
impeded by a hgh' l n —bad position fora rr tic—
can’t see tlie stage, through them ; —changed
jin seat for nno-her, not much better—got in the
fear of some large Fathers—the lady excusable
—an ugly bird requires handsome plumage—
Moved again—thought from the cracking of nuts
I had got into the vicinity of a pig-pen—dished

rude conduct from the gallery—''lie performers

I)A RING VILLAINY.
On the evening of the 28th ult. a little
after dusk, while mr. William Portlock,
(Grocei in Wide Water near the corner of
Commerce street,)wa engaged behind the
desk near the door of his store, in counting
his money from the till, a person, whether
black or white, lie could not ascertain, from
the expertness with which it was accom
plished, thrust his hand over the desk, and
grasping a parcel of Gmail notes, (amount
about S3O) made his escape before any at
tempt could be made to apprehend him. It
is peculiarly fortunate for mr. Portlock that
the grasp of this villain did not extend to a
pocket bo -k which lay within a few inches
•f the \> tree! taken, into which only a few
minute- b* fore he had put notes to the arn
mount of 600 dollars. Having heard late
ly of -everal adicit performances in this
line, v*- hope this notice will have the ef
fect of placing nur fellow citizens on their
guard ‘iiuv they oiler any inducements to
slight-of-hatid gentry to give them a
specimen of their dexterity.
A gentleman who came passenger in the
brig Juno from Pernambuco, arrived at
Philadelphia, states, that a law had passed
in July lust, to take ciVeet in all the Brazil
ports on the first of november following,
laying a duty on all ships and cabin stores,
(24 per cent custom house valuation) —the
articles comprised in the above law are,
ships provisions, spare new spars, anchors,
cables, rigging, sails, powder. liquors and
all private stores of the masters, supercar
goes and passengers, whether they are
landed or not.
Monstrous—if true.
Capt. Eaton, of the brig Rover, who ar
rived at Wilmington, (n. c.) on Saturday,
21st inst. in 20 days from Trinity, (Mart.)
and 14 days from St. Eustatia and St.
Thomas, informs the editor of the Record
er, that at St. Eustatia the conduct of the
Venezulian independent squadron, under
the command of Brion, was spoken of ir,
the strongest tapns of indignation and ab
horrence. They had committed depreda
tions on every flag they happened to meet
with. At St. Martins, mattrasscs and wo
men’s clotlnng had been exposed for sile,
stained with blood, and bearing marks of
violence and murder. A Spanish lady and
her two daughters had been masacred,a
few weeks previous to capt. E*ton’s sail
ing, by Brion. The lady offered to ransom
herself and daughters at a high price, on
condition of being landed at any place in
the island of Cuba—her solicitations were
vain—she was murdered in cool blood—
and her daughters, after having been viola
ted by this monster Brion, were beheaded
on board his own ship. With regret we
state, that there is every probability of the
truth of the above, and that the sacred cause
of liberty has been and continues to be,
profaned by assassins of the blackest char
acter ; and that under the banner of inde
pendence are protected, daemons in the
shape of men.
Capt. 1). further states, that on account
of the Patriot squadron no one pretends to
take money from one island to another, not
even the packets that run between St.
Thomas and St. Croix.

On Tuesday week, negro Eppy, the pro
perty of David Meade, esq. was arraigned
before the county court of Frederick Va.
and tried for inducing negro Millv, a slave
the property of James Serginer, to infuse a
portion of poison, furnished by said Eppy,
in a pot of coffee, on the 11th ult. with the
intention to destroy the whole family of
said Serginer. The testimony was clear
and conclusive; consequently the prison
er was found guilty, and sentenced to be
hung on Friday the 11th Dec. next. The
court, however, in consideration of the pris
oner’s general good character, recommend
ed him to the mercy of the executive, and
have proposed commuting his punishment
for transportation. Fortunately the dose
administered was so large s to occasion
immediate vomiting, which, with the medi
cal aid promptly given, saved the lives of
seven individuals from falling victims to
this fiend.like attempt.
“ Van Alstine taken. —-Under this head
the BufFaloe Patriot of the 27th inst. says
—“Last evening a person was taken at
Black Rock, and brought to this village and
lodged in gaol, answering the description
of Van Alstine. He left Fort Erie last
week, in capt. Johnson’s vessel for Ohio,
but the very heavy head winds obliged her
to return. We learn, on his examination
before judge Watson, that he called his
name Allen—says he was from r Guilderland
near Albany, on his way to Ohio via Mon
treal and Kingston—he denied being ac
quainted with mr. Huddleston. Although
he had not been positively identified to
be Van Alstine when our paper went io
press, yet from every circumstance, there
is perhaps little doubt of his proving to be
that wretched man.

RECOMMENDATIONS;
To Mr.
I have read, sir, with great pleasure the
• memoirs of the life of miss Smelt,” w hich you
were so good as to send to me. It is a work
that must be interesting and useful to all who
peruse it, and is especially calculated to benefit
the youth of her own sex. “Though dead, she

voice.

To Mr.
D ear Sir —l thank you for the copy of the me-1
moirs of miss Smelt, which you had the goodness
to send me. 1 have read the volume with much
satisfaction, it is a very interesting account o
the effect of religion on a singularly pious and
devout mind, and from her youthful character
of die subject of these memoirs, will be read
w ith interest and religious advantage, especialh
by the young. The ample recomendations
which are attached to the volume, are, l think
sufficient to secure it a favourable reception
from the public.
