It is intimated, though upon what au

president of the u. s. hank, and that he will
serve if elected. Os mr. C’s merits and

we understand that the present incumbent
has discharged his duty entirely to the sat

holders, (including those even who were
inimical tohis appointment) and that there
fore whoever may.oppose him, his re-elec

On Thursday last, all the keys of the

made for them ; and suspicion fixed on
Paul Allen, a colored man, that day dis

accordingly arrested, and two of them
found upon him—he confessed his guilt,
and informed where the remainder were
concealed, which were regained. lie is

Extraordinary Somnolency.
On Thursday, the 17th inst. John Ho
garth, of Westmoreland, a young man, who
for some time back has gone to Howgill
school, arose from his bed fast asleep and
went a distance of < miles and a half be
fore he awoke, t~i his great astonish
mentfound himself sitting in Howgill chap
pel porch, adjoining the said school. He
afterwards went above a mile, to a friend’s
house, to borrow some cloths, as his only
covering was a shirt and night cap. He
received no injury, though the night
was Irosty,-excepting his feet, which were
much bruised. The following day, in the
road w’ere found his Greek testan.ent and
bible, which he had been reading the night
before, according to custom; and a slate
was also found at the school door. It ap
pears that he had called to see a friend, as
usual, by the way, and on approaching the
door, had said, “what are you in bed yet
and being asked what he wanted, replied,
“I am going to school sure,” and marched
off. Foreign pa.
A gouty gentleman in Palace yard Lon
don, being one night sitting alone by his
parlour fireside,a well dressed man came
very civilly into the room, \yith a “Sir, I
observe your servant is just gone to the ale
house, and carelessly left your street door
open: how easy it would be now for any
rascal to come in, and blow out these two
wax-candles,thus! and thus! and runa
way with this heavy pair of candlesticks !”
which he accordingly did without waiting
for a reply.
Milton being asked by a friend whether
he would instruct his daughters in the dif

tongue is sufficient for a woman.”
