TO THE PRINTERS OF THE Uni
ted States,
XNTI.EMEN —In presenting a list of new
prices of types, some explanatory remarks may
be useful.
The former prices were fixed during a period
in which the raw materials were dear, and not
• easily to be procured, and it is presumed that
they had some claim to be considered moderate,
as, in 1812. Type were more than three per
cent lower in Philadelphia, than in London ;
njwl no advance was made on those prices, du
ring the late war, although existing circum
stances would have justified the measure. It
was considered that an advance would be an ac
tual loss to the printers, as the competition in
the printing business had; before that period,
arrived at such a point, that the public were sup
plied with printing, at nearly the minimum ;
and also, that it was probable the prices of types
would continue some time after the return of
peace, and recompense for any advantage that
was given up. This has taken place.
r.ii some time past, types have been lowered
in value, but not in price. They have been
sold on long ami frequently uncertain credit,
which produces, to the seller all the effects of
reduction of price, whilst to the printer who
pays it is of comparatively little benefit. All
the advantage is in favor of those who promise,
but do not perform, as in truth they get types
tor nothing, and the solvent printers pay for
t hem. Another objection to this mode of redu
cing price is, that it absorbs the seller’s funds,
and, no matter how industrious or frugal he may
be, subjects him to all the inconveniences of
poverty.
Men who possess talents, economy, industry
and honor, will sometimes lack money. The
characters who have just claims to those attri
butes, will rarely be at a loss for friends, and
will enter on business with a more favorable
prospect of success, when assisted by a moder
ate, than by an extended credit, which is equal
ly within the reach of a rival, who, with an ar
dent disposition for speculation and adventure,
may have but doubtful claims to reputation for
prudence.
In order to leave no ground for complaint, it
is to be understood that all purchasers, since
the first of April, who comply with the new
terms, will be entitled to benefit by the new
prices
Presuming on the long intimacy which lias
subsisted between you, gentlemen, and this es
tablishment, I request you will give this an in
sertion in your papers,
Your’s respectfully,
JAMES UONALDSON.

Copy of a letter from C. TV. Do y ley. esq.
Charleston, march 8, 1814.
Dear Sir, —I feel much pleasure in having it
in my power to communicate a surprising cure,
effected by the medicine I purchased from you,
termed dr. Robertson’s elixir of health. I will
state the following facts : about the latter end
of Nov. last, I procured from you some of the
elixir of health, for a boy of mine, who had
laboured under a violent cough for more than
twelve months, attended with slow fever and
shortness of breath, it had reduced him so much
that 1 concluded it would terminate fatally. II
took many other medicines and found no re
lief. He continued to use the elixir for about
three weeks, when his cough, fever and short
ness of breath ceased, and he is now in good
health, having had no return of his disorder.
Should any person wish to have more particular
information, I will, with pleasure, satisfy their
enquiries, by applying to me.
I am, Sir, your’s, he.
To John Ditott. G. W. Doyley.
Burster district, dec. 3, 1813.
Dear sir, —When in Charleston last, I called
on y ou, and purchased two bottles of your sto
machic elixir of health, which you recom
mended to me to take for a cough and an op
pression on the breast. I have since used the
medicine according to your directions, and
found it to be very beneficial to me in remov
ing the complaints ; therefore I think it my
duty to recommend it to all persons afflicted
with the above complaints to give the medicine
a trial.
I am, dear sir, your’s with respect.

Vegetable Nervous Cordials ;
Or, Nature’s Grand Restorative.
(Price gland 50 cents.)
Is confidently recommended as the mosteffi
cious medicine for the speedy relief and cure
of all nervous complaints, attended with inward
weakness, depression of the spirits, head ache,
tremore, faintness, hysteric fits, debility, and
various complaints resulting from secret im
propriety of youth and dissipated habits, resi
dence in warm climates, the immoderate use
of tea, the unskilful or excessive use of mercu
ry, so often destructive to human life ; the dis
eases peculiar to females, at a certain period
of life, flour albus, &c. &c.
Under the denomination of nevous disorders
are included, several diseases of the most dan
gerous kind, and are so various, that a volume
would hardly suffice to complete a description
of them. It pervades, with its baneful influ
ence, the whole nervous system, writhing the
heart with inexpressible anguish, and exciting
the most dreadful suggestions of horror and
despair. To this demon have thousands fallen
a sacrifice, in the direful transport of its rage.
The most common symtoms at this commence
ment, are weakness, flatulence, palpitations,
watchfulness, drowsiness after eating, timidity,
flashes of heat and cold, numbness, cramp, gid
diness, painsin the head, back and loins; hicup,
difficulty of respiration and delutilion, anxiety,
dry cough, Stc.
