May 18.
The (hip Mohawk, Sullivan, from
Savannah tor this port, palled by for
Rio- Bueno yesterday, deeply laden.
Capt. Sullivan fays that the (hip Dau
phin, Reid, failed from Savannah for
this port eight days before him.
The American ship Louisa, Clarke,
which lately arrived at Savannah-la-
Mar, from Georgia, was taken poflef
fion of for three or four days by a
French privateer.
KINGSTON,(J amaica) May 14.
One hundred and forty fail of trauf
ports, with 10,000 land forces, a con-
Iderable number of them He(fians, were
left at Cape Nicholas Mole, by the di
vision of the fleet lately arrived.
A reinforcement of 5000 men, from
the Windward I (lands, may shortly be
expeded at St. Domingo.
Alniolt all the inhabitants of the city
of St. Domingo have left that place for
Cuba and the Spanilh Main, not choof
ino to relide under a republican govern
ment. The few remaining ex refs their
wiih of becoming fubje&s of his Britan
nic majesty, and hope ere iong to fee tne
Britilh flag displayed in that quarter.
NEW-YORK, May 30.
On Saturday arrived the snow Mer
maid, Capt. Hawley, in 20 days from
St, Bartholomew’s. By the arrival oi
the Mermaid, we have information,
that the Bntjh made an attack on St.
Lucie, a lew days previous to captai
Hawley’s departure from St. Bartholo
mew's, and that they nvere completely de
feated vi their attempt. The iofs of the
Britilh from our information, •was im
vieujely great. Three transports <with
•wounded on board had gone to Martin
ique, and a reinforcement was sent for m
order to renew the attack. The gen
eral opinion, however, at St. Bartholo
mew's, was, that their scheme would
prove abortive, as the French were well
fortified.
Yeiterday the (hip Jersey, Captain
Barnes, arrived at this port in 42 days
from Havre de Grace, by whom we have
a reiteration of the account of peace with
Austria, but not with England, as the
report of the day at Havre.
June 1.
By a letter from a gentleman at Gi
braltar, to a merchant in this city, dat
ed April 4, we are informed, that Mr.
Humphreys had adviied masters of ves
sels bound up the Streights nottopro
ceed, as there were grounds to apprehend
they would be taken by the Algerines,
the time for arrival of the ransom money
from the United States having expired,
no calh come to hand.
Authentic Intelhgence .
Bv the French frigate L'lnfurgente,
arrived the day before yesterday at this
port, we are informed, that she belongs
toadiviiion of eight men of war, failed
from BreA in April laid, and arrived at
Cape Francois on the tenth of May.
That this division is compoled of one
frigate of 44 guns, three do. of 40, and
four (hips of the line cut down.
On the 11 th of May, arrived at the
Cape a second division of three lhips,
two of which are of 74 gu is, and the
third a frigate of 44 guns. A third
squadron was announced, and expe&ed
in every moment. This last division is
composed of eight (hips of the line, and
I ten frigates or Hoops of war. It is the
[ very fame which the laid fall intercepted
took 40 English vefiels, valued at 40
millions of livres, together with a 74,
one ot the convoying (hips.
On board the Watigny, a 74 one of
i the second division, were citizens Son
thonax, Le Blanc, Raimond, and Gi
| rand, commiflaries of the executive di-
I rectory of Franee, and its envoy to the
■windward iilands. Their colleague,
Citizen Roume, had arrived fome time
before them, in the Spanilh part of bt.
Domingo, which is immediately to be
I delivered up to Franee.
. 1 he above intelligence being authen
tic, will set aside all doubt which before
clouded the Vi eid-Lidia accounts refpect
i ig the arrival of a French reinforce-
I ment in that quarter.
I In addition to the above account, wa

Extract of a Letter from Port de Paix,
dattd 6th May.
Payments here and at the Cape, have
been formally fulpended—-Perroud is
gone to the City of St. Domingo, it is
aid to meet the Commiflaries of France,
but many doubt the truth of the report
of their arrival. The situation of Go
ernment here and at the Cape, is la
mentable indeed, ‘fhe General is obli
ged to have avail number of troops
with him for his protection, and he is
without a Angle barrel of flour—they
nave become clamorous, and without
ipeedy relief, the worit of consequences
are to be apprehended. Here we are
not so badly otf for provisions ; but the
troops arc so much harrahed with con
tlaiu duty, thar there are many malcon
tents ; to insure l'afety to the town,
they are conftantiy obliged to parroie,
and scarcely a weekpaiies but we a;e
menaced with burning the town, kil
ling all the Whites and Mulattoes, and
thelc menaces by the Africans, who do
not know what they want.
PETERSBURG, June 7.
We hear from Kentucky that the In
dians killed a family, between the 20th
and 30th of March, who were going up
the Miflifippi, between the moutii oi
the Ohio and Illinois, confuting of
twelve persons; ten of the dead bodies
are laid to have been found.
KNOXVILLE, May 2.
We learn, that on the 26th ult. as
three men were hunting horles on the
Welt Fork of Little Pigeons, Sevier
county, tiiey were fired on by a party
oi ten or twelve Indians. The men re
turned the fire and killed a Cherokee
fellow called the Sour Mulh, and wound
ed an other. The men had their clothes
cut in federal places by balls, but receiv
ed no other injury.
CHARLESTON, June ic. .
Again has this city been vifrted with
the dreadlul calamity of fire. On Mon
day lait, at 3 o’clock in the afternoon, a
room in Lodge-alley was difeovered to
be on fire, which in a few minutes com
municated to the neighbouring build
ings. The citizens soon aflembled ;
but their exertions could not flop the
devouring flames ‘till 3 o’clock on Tues
day morning, nor until a very conside
rable part of the city was defiroyed.
At this moment, owing, to the confufion
occasioned by the diiafter, it is not in
our power to give an exad account of
the loss, or of the number oi buildings
deitroyed ; but thole acquainted with
the city will conceive the damage done,
on being told that every house in Qjjeen
llreet, from the Bay to the corner of
Uhurch-itreet ; ail Uriion-ftreetcontin
ued ; two thirds of Union-ltreet ;
Church-llrect, from Broad-ilreet to St.
Phillip’s church, with only two accep
tions; Chalmers and Beresford’salleys j
Kinloeh’s court; a.td tne north fide ot
Broad-ltreet, from the State-house to
Mr. Jack’s, four doors below Church
ltreet ; and five houics on the Bay,
from the corner of Queen-flreet, were
burnt to the ground.
1 he public buildings defiroyed are,
the French Church, and the upper or
Beet Market. St. Philip's Church,
was on iirefeveral time, and ultimately
mull have been deitroyed, ifa spirited
negro had not alcended to the top of the
cupola, next to the vane, and tore off the
(h ingles,
Tfte private buildings deitroyed, and
the property they contained, arc of im
mcn e amount.
hive hundred chimneys, it is said,
have been counted, from which the
buildings are burnt ; and 150,000 k
iterling, is supposed to be a sum iar Ihort
of the value of these buildings. The
goods and furniture deitroyed, are pro
bably nearly equal to this ium.
Early in the fire, a white man, whose
name we have not learnt, was killed by
a pipe of wine (ailing on him; and 3
or 4 negroes were killed at other peri
ods.
Mr. Charles Banks, had his leg very
much hurt.
Mr. Laurence Campbell, Mr. Henry
Lancheiter, and Mr. Joseph Verre,
were considerably hurt, while exert
ing thetnlelves to blow up a house in
Bruad-ftreet. We are happy to add,
their wounds are not thought dange
rous.
These are all the accidents we have
yet heard of, and we have no reafen to
believe that there are others which will
be attended with any fatal effe&s.
The diifrelied situation to w’hich up
wards of two hundred families are redu
ced, by this difailer, is cafier to be con
ceived tha v delcribed ; or how numbers
of them will be able to obtain places to
(belter themselves from the viciflitudes
ol the (ealons, is hard to fay. btill it
is to be hoped that the citizens, whose
houses have efcapcd the (lames, will ex
ert themselves, as they have heretofore
done, when like calamities have vilited
the city, in providing for them such ac
commodations as may be in their power
to afford.
Whether this misfortune is the efFed
of deligu of accident, is not yet, and per
haps never will be known ; from the
examination made on the fpet, where it
was laid to have firlf began, by the ln
tendant, there is reason to fuppofeitwas
the work of fome incendiary, but no
proof is yet olfered that w ill fix the crime
on any perion.
June 17.
This city was yeiterday fubjeft to re
peated alarms from calls ol lire, and re
ports ot attempting to set it on fire.
Several attempts have been proved,
and examinations of the perpetrators en
tered upon.
Three very principal characters,
William and John Fall, and George ot.
Clair, have been at iatt iaiely secured in
the goai. Their confinement has been
an object which has interelted every ci
tizen, as to tneir daring villainy and ac
tivity, ail the mislortuncs of the city
nave been adjudged.
In the course of yeiterday forenoon,
attempts were made to let tire to a house
in Tradd-ftreet, and an out-building in
Archdale-it reet; in consequence of which
the in Cendant has iliued a proclamation,
offeringa reward of one thoufanddollars,
to any perion who will apprehend the
perpetrators. Happily in each circum
ltance, the difeovery was made before
any damage was done. In the forenoon
another aiann of tire was given. From
the information of several gentlemen,
who examined the premiles, and a view
of the building, we are fully fatisfied
that there was nothing intentional in
the latter calc ; a baker who had been
burnt out on Monday, obtained leave to
occupy an oven in Queen-itreet, near
King-street; the oven had been unem
ployed for fome time ; as soon as the
fire was kindled in the oven, the flue or
chimney, which was foul, .took tircaifo,
but communicated to nothing elie beiore
it was ex tinguiihed.
SAVANNAH, June ai.
Arrived laA evening, Schooner Nep
tune Capt. Smith, from St, Vincents,
and 10days from St. Thomas’s.
Capt. Smith left St. Vincents on the
4th iint. and informs that the Britilh
forces arrived there the fame day, under
the command oi Gen. Abercrombie,
who landed his troops and expedted to
attack tne French polls on the 10th.
Capt. Smith confirms the account of
St. Lucia being taken by the English,
and that the lois o( the French, by accu
rate returns, was 800 killed and wound
ed, and that of the Englilh, 1200 —
tnat they took about 1500 men, wo
men and children prisoners, and were
on board a transport at St. Vincents. —
1 heirdeftination he could not learn.
On his homeward bound pafiage,
spoke (hip Neptune, J. Thompson, ot
Baltimore, from Deinerara, who was
there condemned, fold, and purchased by
the Captain in behalf of the owners—
was bound for Martinique.
Yeiterday, 25 leagues from Tybe
light, was brought too by the Viper,
Sloop of War, ol sixteen 6 pounders—
was permitted to pass without detention.
A Charlefion paper of the 16th, gives
an account of the Office of the French
Consul being broken open, and 160
dollars (tolen ; on which occasion the
Governor has ilfued a proclamation,
offering a reward of one hundred dol
lars, to any person or persons who will
procure the apprehension and conviction
of the offender or offenders.
A nc-jj method of paying DEBTS !
A Physician delivers the planter, at
the end of the year his bill, and requells
payment ; then, to be fare his charges
are very extravagant, and he is immedi
ately difcliargeu, but the account re
mains unsettled.
It the merchant demands his money
at the years end, it is said, he has charg
ed things that were never received ; oe
i, a lcoundrcl, and may get a beating
for it —let him sue, then he is lure he
cannot recover lm money under three
years, and draws no in rereft 1 on an
open account ; thus he is put off.
Should the Carpenter demand his mo
ney for work done, lie is told, that his
work is not faithfully done, and there
fore he cannot exped to be paid ; if
more work is wanting, why employ
someone else, and let him sue, the courts
are tedious, and he will get tired before
I (hall ; besides 1 will prove, the house
is leaky, that it is not properly weather
boarded, by which means I’ll have it in
my power to curtail his bill, and keep
him out of what is his due, a ieaft h.e*
years.
If a Bricklayer demands his money,
lie is moil afluredly an impertinent fel
low, and iliall wait. Thus it is with
every application for money—every
one to whom it is due, is put off in this
manner—The planter takes his money,
buys more negroes, goes on a frolick to
the northward—The general cry is,
how rich such a man has got by provi
sions riling, but when he dies, his ellate
cannot pay all his debts, for which rea
(on the Executors will pay none.
