The mod recent intelligence of the
position of the Imperial army states,
that on the 1 ithand 12th, it was in the
environs of Brefcia, and seemed to re
treat by the bilhopric of Trent. The
French had made no movement which
indicated a deftgn to enter the Venetian
territory.
I o give forne encouragement to the
Austrian army so horribly fatigued by
the late events, they give out that the
last reinforcements lent by the emperor
to general Beaulieu march without stop
ping ; and the days of repofc are those
when they arc longed cn the road,Le
caule then all the troops are carried in
waggons.
They write from Vienna, that these
reinforcements will be fuccelitveJy car
ried to 60,000 men. They add, that
30,000 Ruffians will replace the garri*.
Tons of both the Gallicias, which have
received orders to march by the Tyrol.
FRANKFORT, May 21.
The fear of a rupture between Russia
and Sweden has been renewed, by the
departure of Baron de Budberg, from
Stockholm. We learn from Stockholm,
at afrer- he left that place, the govern
ment dispatched a Courier to Peterf
ourg; and it is presumed that thean
fvvev which he will carry back, will de
cide on peace or war. Waiting the
event, military preparations continue to
be made in Sweden and Finland.
L E Y D E N, May 24.
General Bournonville has lent a corps
infantry and cavalry, to gar
riion Amsterdam. This step caused the
moft violent debates in the afiembly,
where the majority were, of opinion,
ifiat “ they could not answer for the
cqnfequerxes, if the cleft gn Ihould be re
alized.” Serious apprehensions are en
tertained, and a general dismay seems to
have taken place, left any violence takes
place between the Burghers and the
troops. Would to God it may pass ov
er v/ithout!
FRONTIERS of ITALY, May 29.
The French army under gen. Buona
parte, confilling of upwards of 100,000
men, is advancing still farther ; and the
army of the Alps, under Kelterman, is
advancing to adl jointly with the form
er ; it is estimated at 35,000 men. Beau
lieu has retreated to Tyrol, finding it
impofiible to refill so powerful an army.
Ihe city of Bologna, belonging to the
pope, the largest, after Rome, in the ec
clesiastical states, is in the poffeflion of
the trench. The French advanced
ports penetrated as far as Urbino, to
which place the pope has sent deputies
to make remonstrances against these ini
mical proceedings in his dominions,.and
to declare his pacific sentiments. It is I
laid Mantua has surrendered by capito- >
lation. The French general Maflena
has laid siege to the citadel of Milan,
and it is expeded, from the heavy fire
he is directing against it, that it will
soon surrender. The French are now
marching against Rome.
CORSICA, May 20.
7 wenty-two diftrifets aie in a ilatc of infur

lilhcc* a manifeflo, threatening the insurgents
with coercive mealures. The latter frequently
exclaiiri, “ Long live the king and g<*neial I’ao
li ; but down with the viceroy .” When they
appeared before Ajaccio, above eighty dis
charges of cannon were made upon them. As
they destroyed the mills and the vineyards near
the place, belonging to the enemies of Paoli,
the town of Ajaccio has since been under the
nccefiity of being supplied irom the royal ma
gazines.
P A R I S, May 29.
The directory has addrefled the fol
lowing proclamation to the armies of
the Sambre and Meufc :
“ New cries of war are heard on the
banks of the Rhine. What rage is it
thus goads on our cruel enemy, who,
amid ft his disasters and our triumphs, has
the temerity of breaking an armiftice,-
which he himfelf had demanded, and you
had granted him, in hopes of a speedy
peace? Guided by the ferocious Eng
liih, he receives their gold and contempt
as the price of his fubmiifion, and of the
blood of his harvest warriors. Let then
the republican bayonet teach the totter
ing thrones of the monsters coalefccd
against the human race, and strike ter
ror into their bosoms—let your irrefut
able valour within a few days put a pe
riod m that ftrugglc of the liberty of
