Modern Devotion.
TO chnrch I went
With good in ent,
To hear Sangraao preach and pray ;
But objects there
Black, brown, and fair,
Turn'd eyes and heart a different way.
Miss Patty's fan,
Mils Molly’s inan
With powdered hair and dimpled cheek,
Miss Delia’s eyes,
That once made prize
Os Foplivg , with his hair so fleck.
Embroider’d gowns,
And play-houie tunes,
Eftrang’d all hearts from heav’n so wide:
I felt moll odd,
This house of God
Should all be flutter, pomp, and pride.
Now pray be wife,
No prayers will rife
To heaven—where hearts arc not sincere :
No church was made
For Cupid's trade :
Then why these arts of ogling here ?
Since time draws nigh
When you and I
At church mull claim the sexton’s care;
Leave pride at home
Whene’er you come
To pay to Heaven your offerings—there.

Cotton Ginning.
r 'p H E Subscriber is empowered by
X Mr. EVEy of the Bahama lllands,
to receive a fublcription for his Cot
ton Ginning Machine, Gen
tleman of the dales of South-Carolina
and Georgia, who may with to become
fubferibersy are requeued to fend ior
ward their names as soon as convenient,
in order that the fubfeription may be
doled. Mr. Eve will engage to deliv
er the Machine, independent oi the pow
er that impels it, in Savannah, for fifty
guineas. On Mr. Eve’s part, he con
tracts that this Machine will gin joolbs.
of clean cotton per day, with a small
impelling power either of wind, of wa
ter, or of hories. This machine in a
few days, and with a trifling expence,
can be attached to any machine in use
for other purpefes, such as Kce machines,
law or grill miils. Mr. Eve will fend
over a person competent to set them in
motion, and fully to explain their sev
eral powers. From fome small expe
riments that have been made upon the
green feed cotton it appears that from
rSO to 20olbs. can be ginned in this
machine per day. For further informa
tion upon this ittbjedl I beg leave to re
fer gentlemen to the undersigned certi
ficate from a respectable Cotton Plan
ter of this state, who has been an eye
.vitnefs of the execution done by this
nachine, and to various certificates that
nave come out at different times in the
Bahama papers, signed by the molt ref
pcitable Planters in that country. Fur
ther particulars will be made known
upon application from any gentleman
who may with to become a fubferiber.
Phis machine has met withuniverfal ap
probation in every part of the Weft-
Indies to which it has been feat.
THOMAS SPALDING.
GEORG lA, Chatham County.
IDO certify, that, being on a visit for
my health to New Providence, one
>f the Bahama lllands, I was induced to
make an experiment on Mr. Eve's cot
ton Ginning Machine of the green feed
cotton, commonly cultivated in the back,
country of the southern dates, and ier.t
to Savannah for a small quantity there
of, which on experiment I found to an
swer. The rainy season letting in a
bout *.hc time I received the cotton the
whole was not ginned, but Mr. Eve af
lured me his machine was competent,
from the calculation he had made, to
clean out in good weather two hundred
weight of clean cotton in the courle ot a
day. The machine separates the feed
from the Cotton by rollers without do
ing any injury to the flaple, and, from a
fampie of feed and cotton in poilelfion
of the fubferiber, any gentleman can be
immediately convinced of the truth of
this opinion. During my day in Nas
sau I frequently vilited Mr. Eve’s ma
chine which was impelled by wind, and
never law more than two people attend
ing the fame, one a grown person and
the other a final 1 boy. This machine
is capable of being attached to almoit any
of thole uled for various purposes in this
country ; the conltruction appears by
no means complex, and every planter of
consequence in the Bahamas is in the
practice of using them.
