(Continued from the NeiofpaperJ At on* v. m. the two frigates hoisted French colours, the largest ship a commodore's pen dant, and at the fame moment, commenced a and well dire&rd fire on us with their fem r.baces ; the corvette at this time hauled more up, and to my great astonishment, brought to, to board a iloop palling us on the contrary tack. As the commodore continued to wait for the Thames, we thereby approached them both, but were considerably retarded by the efiefts of thrir frot. At four p. m. the Thames being the (ternmoft ihip, bore round a.p. to avoid the fire from the Unicorn, and to pour a broad fide into the Margaritta’s bow, when I had the pleasure to fee capt. Martin manoeuvre hisfhip with the greatest judgment, ar.d with the utniqft gallantry, he laid himfelf close along lide his opponent. The superior and well directed fire, from the Santa Mar g.<iitta marked the difeipline of his (hip, and icon put the Thames into his pofleffion. The commodore, on feeing his companion fall, made all fail, and by sudden and judicious, though ttnfuccefsful manoeuvre, endeavoured to gain the wind of the Unicorn. We were at this time chafing him towards the entrance of the Irish channel, and soon after paired close to the Tusker Rock. The parity of failing in the two ships, aided Yy the judgment of the enemy’s commander, kept us at running fight for ten hours ; during w hich period we were much annoyed in our fails and rigging, and were for feme time un luckily deprived of theufeof our main-topsail; but. on its falling less wind after da* k. we were enabled to ul'e our fupernumcrary flying fails, roval fleering fails, See. which, by flow de grees, brought us so near In’s weather quarter, as to take the wind from his fails ; when i\t half pall ten at night, after having pursued 2tO miles, we fliot up along aside of our antagonist, gave him three cheers, 3rid commenced close aclion, which had continued in that position with great impetuosity on both sides, for thirty five minutes ; when on clearing up of the smoke, I observed that the enemy had dropt on our quarter, was close hauled, attempting by a mailerly manoeuvre, to crofsour flern and gain the wind. This was happily prevented by our inftar.tly throwing all aback, and giving the ship fir on g Hern-way, by which we palled his bow, regained dur Situation, and renewed the attack. The effect of our fire soon put an end to all manoeuvre, for the enemy’s sh ip was com pletely difmantlcd, her fire ceased, and all fur ther refillance appeared to be ineffc&ual; they called to us they had surrendered. The ship proves to be I,a Tribune, commanded by com modore John Moulflon, mounting 44 guns, though pierced for 48 ; on the main deck 26 twelves, on the quarter deck and forecaflle, 16 long fixes and 421 b. carronades ; had on board, at the commencement of the aftion, 337 men, 37 of whom were killed, 13 badly wounded, & two (lightly wounded. The ship is quitemew, launched since the commencement of the war, fails extremely fall, isoflarge dimensions, being on the gun-deck two feet broader and 13 feet iongerthan the Unicorn. Commodore Moulflon who, I am sorry to add, is among the wound ed, is by birth an American, but has served sixteen years in the French navy, and during the present war has always bad the command of a division. The squadron late under his or ders, confiding of La Tribune, La Ploferpini, La Thames, and La Lrgere, of 20 nine pounders, had left Brest two days only, and had taken no thing ; La Proserpine separated the preceding evriiing, in a fog.—l will not attempt to find words to convey to you, Sir. the fenle I feel of the conduft of the officers and crew of the (hip’s company under my command ; for if it was poflible for me to lay any thing that could add to the glory oi the Britiffi seamen, I have am ple field for so doing in the situation I held this day.—lndeed nothing less than the confi dence of the moil gallant support from them, and the high opinion I entertain of the Santa Margaritta, our Tecond, could induce me to vi!k an aftion with a force apparently so much our superior ; and while I congratulate myfelf Upon the happy efte£ls of their valour in the’ Rapture oftwoof the enemy’s irigates, that have done so much mifehief to our commerce du ring the war, and on their present cruise were likely to do so much more, you may easily con ceive wffiat my feelings are, when I inform you Sir, this service is obtained without the lofsof one of the brave men in the ship under my command ; my happiness will be complete, if 1 find the Santa Margsritta has been equally fortunate. In juflice to the officers of the Unicorn, I tnuft l egos you to recommend to the notice of my lords commissioners of the admiralty my firft and second lieutenants, Mefi'rs. Palmer ana Tyior, Mr. Quayle, the mailer, and lieutenant hart of the marines. I bad great teafon to lP gret the absence of Mr. Carpenter, the third hfutenant, of two mates, and fome of my brft feamrn, who were the evening before Put on board a valuable fb ip from Suri jam ; b M t the able assistance which I ffiould ®ave derived from lieutenant Carpenter, I was to feel the less from the exertions of ®r. Collier, the purser, who voluntarily otter and undertook to supply his place to the of hi* abilities, and whose name I beg you include in your recommendation to their mrdfhips. We are now using our utmost ex ertjons to put the Unicorn and her {battered P f ize in a condition to proceed to Cork. I have the honor to be, (Ac. £ 3c. (Ac. THOMAS WILLIAMS. I immediately chaced, and came along lide of her at nine, r. u. when, after a dole aftion of forty-five minutes, (he flruck ; proves to be the National frigate La Proser pine, mounting 26 eighteen pounders, 12 nines, and 4 thirty-two pound carronades, with 348 men, commanded by citizen Pevrieu ; failed from Brcll the 6th instant in company with La Tribune, Thames, and La Lrgere corvette j had not taken any thing. I feel myfelf’ much indebted to the officers and men under my command for their Heady and spirited exer tions during the action.
