An arrival yesterday, occrdioncd the circulation oi’ various reports —They are contained in the followinsr Extra 8 of a letter from St. Cro.x, dated Augufl 3. c< We have received information from England, by a DaniPn veflel, from thence, yesterday 35 days, that a very decisive action had taken place on the Rhine, and the Austrians completely defeated, and all their artillery, baggage, &c. tak en ; farther that Pitt’s house was burnt, and Fox in place. Time will net ad mit my giving you particulars, further than the majority of London, by mobs, &c. iniift on a peace being immediately made, ar.d which without doubt must be. It is probable you will receive ail this, and more before this reaches vou, and therefore ihall not be more particu lar. r From Fort-Dauphin. Capt. Nafon informs us, Fort Dau phin was delivered to the French, just previous to his failing, in purluance of the article in the French and hpanilh treaty, which cedes Spanish Hispaniola tojthe French. The French immediately on getting poffctfion, commenced the exercise of their colonial defp.uifm up on the Americans. They take ail car goes, at their ow n prices, and pay those prices principally in promises only* NEW-YORK, August 23. Apprehensions of a viiit from the French are again afloat in England. Three men were ob.erved in founding and making drafts of the northern coait, lecmingly for their amusement. War rants were iliued cut of the fee ret ary of state’s office, two of them made their ei’cape the other was taken and feat to London.—His examination is kept a profound secret. Many suppose that the whole is a miniftcrial ftrick calculat ed to raise the fears of the people, that they may more eaftly consent to an in crease of the militia and military eftab hffiment, which is proposed to be brought forward at the opening of the new Parliament. August 24.
