At theclofe of the election, the gene ral was chaired through that city in triumph ; a large body of ship carpen ters, who supported the general, carried a flag reprelenting him on horseback trampling on the American colours. r i he Americans in that port took no tice of the .transaction,. and Capt. S. W. saw an Englilh fleet, confid ing of five fail, lying to, abou 4 leagues to windward ; fame time, saw three large (hips about 3 leagues a-head of the Englilh fleet, under easy fail. Same day, in the evening, spoke a Hampton pilot, who informed that he had just come from on board the admiral lhip, and that the three vessels a-head were French frigates, commanded by Captain Barney. The Englilh fleet had been in chafe of them two days, but finding that it was impoflibie to overhaul them, had given up the pu.iuit a* altogether ufelefi. September 3. Captain Martha!, who went out of this port in the lhip Unicorn, was exe cuted at Cape-Francois the 16th ult. bet en sailors and the mate of the brig Philadelphia, wno had murdered their Captain at sea, and who were captured by commodore Barney, were eAecutad with iVlarihal. NORFOLK, September 6, Ship Eliza f‘covered. Capt. .Lambeth arrived here yester day irom New-York, informs that the lhip Eliza, American property, from the Lie of May, with a cargo oi fait, lately captured within three miles ol the Capes, by the Britilh frigate the Thetis, ana inluitingly kept under her guns in Hampton Road for fix days, has been recovered by the captain and is now fafe n New-York. The lhip it seems car ried away her fore and maintopmufts, and put into the Hook to get others— Capi. FluUey of the Eliza had add refs enough to persuade the prize mailer to let him go up to New- York in company to buy the lpars, and. leiurned with 8 or 10 ot his brother Yankee captains, anu conveyed his own lhip up to the city. Now it the Eliza, an American veiiei, was a lawful prize, no doubt captain Cochran will initituie a claim, which our government it is said muit grant by giving up the vessel again. E. which continu ed 48 hours ; during the gale, the Vi gilant, a transport lhip, commanded by Capt. MTherfon, away on the Keys of Florida, and entirely lott ; the officers and crew came passengers with Capt. Courier.—-At the .ame time saw another lhip on thore, fuppoied to be the William and Mary, who were in com pany with them the day before ; Ihe loon went to p.eces, and the crew fup poied to be lolt.
