Phelim O’Bluff’s EPISTLE toM'/sßzttt
Broadface.
DEAR Bet, if your face were as broad as a
platter,
Your nose full as flat as a pancake, or flatter :
Your bulk like a hogshead, your shape like a
churn,
I’d have you, for ‘better to marrythanburn.’
I have a small cot, by the fide of yon hill,
Some acres of land, just Efficient to till,
Am this fide of forty, am cleaver and hearty.
Attach’d to no fide, and a friend to no party.
My height is fix feet and” two inches exaft,
I’m stout in proportion, of Jrilh extract.
Totell you the truth, though I’m not apt to brag,
In boxing, no Yankee can /land me a fag.
Altho* I’m not handfotde 1 am well enough,
I'll pare clofc my nails, and my whilkers so
rough,
I'll mount my Dutch horse and a courting I’ll
go.
By St. Patrick, I'll have you, Bet, zokether or no:
I’ve no inclination to chide your complaining,
For who is more wretched than maid that is waning?
But bamfb your sorrow, be gay as a lark,
For Betty, you’ll find me a pretty good spark,
To Cortgrefs ne’er hie, with petition aforefaid,
In tone of dcfpondcncy. pray not a word more
said ;
For if our endeavours fiiould chance to prove
lucky,
We'll (end out a colony, weft of Kentucky,
Half Yankee, half Irish, our own fabrication ;
And do what wc can tef increase population.
lor the COLUMBIAN MUSEUM.
A MORAL TALE.
THE variety offitnations into which
tve arc all occasionally thrown, whether
our fpherc in life be splendid or obfeure,
calls lotidly for the constant exertion of
every virtue ; and there are few, if any,
who in the time ofadvcrlity summon rea
son and reftetftiofl to their aid, that do not,
however great their misfortunes, expe
rience the cheering condolence of an in
vifiblegood monitor. By atling up to
the didates of an untainted conlcience,
we may welcome calamity with a smile,
and serenely view the ineffedaal attacks
of malevolence ; whose loathforne darts,
unable to penetrate the virtuous bolom,
dired their disappointed force againlt
a less powerful adversary : but it is dif
ficult to repel those evils which origi
nate from the impurity of our hearts,
that being the fourcc of their exigence.
The only hope is, that this circmnftancc,
instead of precipitating the unhappy vic
tim to perdition, may remind him of the
pre-eminence of virtue, once nearer his
teach; and Simulate him gradually to
labour for the attainment of its delight
ful and advantageous summit. Virtue
has undoubtedly sometimes received
temptations, almost too powerful : But
how confpicuouflv do we often fee it re
warded by the timely hi ter vent ion of
Providence ! and with what additional
luftre—with what divine refulgence,
does it on such occasions shine upon the
foul, adding new charms to its original
brightness, and letting every officious
innovation at defiance ! To record the
ignominious fate of vice, is certainly
laudable ; but to paint the di ft relies of
misguided innocence and its splendid re
ward for the preservation of its bright
est gem thrdbgh the unbounded path of
temptation, cannot fail of Reminding
the wanderer, that—
Vice is a monster of such frightful mein,
* As, to be hated, needs but to be feen.’
Pope.
