Vol. i* LISBON, May io. \Ve have lately received the details of anaftion between a Portuguefc veflel and a French frigate in the Eatt-Indies. The former named the Saint Antonio, having failed from Baja, came up with the French veflel, when an aftion com menced, during which the latter laid by to repair ; when, the adion being re newed, an attempt was made to board the Portuguese veflel, which {he evaded ; but not being able to refill the fuperiori tv of the enemy any longer, ltruck her colours, after five hours fighting, having nine killed, and eight wounded. The French (hip carried 44. guns, and the Portuguclc 22. The French, after palling many encomiums upon the brav ery of their opponents, gave them the veflel, upon condition of their not bear ing arms till regularly exchanged. A volcano has made its appearance in the province of Alentejo, since which a fubterraneous noise has been heard in thediftriil ot St. Michael de Mechade, followed by an exploiion ; loon alter this, a hot {tone, of about iooib. weight, was seen to fall though the aperture from whence it proceeded could not be found. WINCHESTER, September 2. It is with a degree of sorrow feidom experienced by the editor hereof, that he enters upon the recital of the following melancholy event —A few days ago an unhappy dispute took place at Bfch, be tween a captain Randolph and Smother gentleman, whole name we have not heard ; that a challenge was lent by the latter to the former, of which a captain Thomas was the bearer ; that captain R. refufed the challenge, and threw the note on the ground, liguifytng at the fame time, that he did not think his op ponent upon an equality -with him. The behaviour of captain R. inflated captain Thomas, who alio dared him to combat, which was refufed by the former upon the fame fcorc. A day or two af terwards, captain Thomas wasbealiing in company that he had frightened feme ot the continentals — This behavior drew down the vengeance of Major Black burn, who very unfortunately happened to be present—his resentment new no bounds—heaflailed C'apt. Thomas, and, I Oh! that we could break off here, but’ aias! the sequel, mournful as it is, mull be disclosed) with a dirk put a period to his existence. The unhappy Major .Blackburn is committed to priibn in Martin Iburgh. NEW-YORK, September 12. ExtraPl of a Utter from a merchant in Stratford (Connecticut) to his friend in Ncw-York, dated qtk injl. “ I Have been up part of the night in con fluence of an alarm from New Field, occa sioned by the moft ffiocking tranfatlion I ever knew in this town. The (tore was robbed of a sum of money, which Mr. Deforrcft the owner lays, was about one thousand dollars. The inhabitants mustered out in all directions, two came to me, and I got a number out from here, and sent to flop all the paifes, to prevent if possible the escape of the villain or villains. —The (lore was let on fire no doubt to pre vent difeovery—it is supposed the boy le 1 the perton or persons into the flore, as there was Handing on the counter, near where he lay dead, fome liquor, and the appearance of fonre one’s having been drinking. The boy was drcfTed, and with his bat on.—l have as yet, this morning, heard nothing further cf this melancholy bufincfs.” UNHAPPY ACCIDENT. From the BOSTON CENTINEL. Capt, Dighton, vs, Capt. Smith. Mr.Rßusse l, SOME time ago I observed in a Nor folk paper, and alio in that put aid vehi cle the Chronicle, that I was denounced for hoillingmy colours at St. Vincents, as a token ol joy at the taking of St. Lucia, by the Britilb. It has always been my practice to “ rejoice with those that rejoic ,,” and as a citizen of a neutrai independant nation, I conceive I have a right so to do, any tenet in politicks, Capt Smith (of Salem) may bold to the contrary notwithstanding ; having nev er given up my natural right of rejoic ing, when and in what manner I fee lit. If I had been in 3 French port on a Eke occafiop, I. would have done the fame if I plea fed. Bat this chicken of mother Cary's, a died on principle:, he would not join in the entertainment (though he was both Hungary and dry) lor this Am ple reason (which gave the affront) viz. he was not invited. Ileadledaifo from neccjfity in not displaying his ft Apes— for he had none on board, except, per haps, those on the Ikin :—He had, it is true, an old Burgee (which served him for bedding) but this was eaten to a ve ry feive bottom by V n,and if he had hung it up, instead of thanks for his politeness, he would have colledted all the manufactures in the Island to pur chase rags.
