THE SHADES OF ENDERMAY.
BY M.UUT.
THE smiling morn, the breathing spring
Invite the tuneful birds to sing ;
And, while they warble ftomcach spray,
Love melts the universal lay.
Let us, Amanda,timely wife,
Let them improve the hour that flies t
And in foft raptures waste the day,
Among the (hades of Endzrmay.
/
For soon mt’ winter of the year,
And age, life’s winter will appear :
At this, thy living bloom mull fade :
As that will ftripthe verdant (hade
Our talle of pleasure then is o’er;
T'he feather’d longllers love no more :
A r d when they droop, and we decay,
the (hades of Ensirmav.
FROM THE FRENCH.
BLI3S does solitude admire—
A wondrous lover of the dark;
Each night putsmut her chamber fire,
But juil keeps : u a Jingle /park !
’Till four (he keeps herfclf alive,
Warm’d by her pity, no doubt;
Then, tiid with kneeling juil at live,
Shefighs, and lets that spark go out !
t
IVHAT IS HAPPINESS?
*TIS an empty fleeting (hade,
, By imagination made :
*Tis a bubble, straw, or worse;
*Tis a baby’s hobby-horse :
‘Tis a little living, clear ;
9 Tis ten thousand pounds a-ycar :
‘Tis a title, ’tis a name ;
‘Tis a puff of empty fame,
Fickle as the breezes blow;
*Tis a Lady’s yes or no !
And when the defeription’s crown’d*
‘Tisjutt no where to be found,
