( Continuedfrom No. 64* ) AMONG the various admirers, who prel'ented themselves, there was not a Angle one whom Amelia ever presumed to favor, without firft confultmg Mrs. T. who being the moil: indulgent of pa rents, never refufed her fan&ion- to any of those innocent recreations amonglt the youth of both fsxes, which must na turally tend to inform and delight the mind, were the young all alike amiable. Mr. B. finding his presence would be necessary at a place a confiderablc diftancc from home, where bufmefs of importance called him, cxprelfcd a defirc to be accom panied by Mrs. B. and her daughter. The young lady received the proposal with pleasure, as much from the kind ness of her father in making the offer, as from the desire of gratifying her own curiosity : Rut Mrs. B. begged to do-* cline it, as they hourly expected the ar rival of their son from a long cruise, whose ship had been ia fevcral engage ments. This consideration had also much weight with Amelia, bur from the recollection of the known kindness of his captain, who it was suggested, would let him remain till their return, Ihc chearlully prepared to accompany her father. But how slender is the foundation on which we are too apt to build our grea test hopes of happiness. • Three days af ter the departure of Mr. B. and liis daughter, theaffettionate parent receiv ed the melancholy information that her son had been ordered on board a prize to proceed to the iiril friendly port: but that on their paflage,.they were attack ed and captured by an Algerine Corsair, after a gallant rcliltance, and it was not certain that he had survived the misfor tune. The absence of her hulband and daughter aggravated the calamity ; and Mrs. B. experienced anguish too poig nant for her delicate frame. However,, before ihe could collect fufficient forti tude to transmit the unhappy intelli gence to her husband, a letter from Hen ry’s captain arrived, regretting the ac cident, and promising in a few days to inform them of their sons real fate, which he believed was far. from being so unfortunate as had been reported. Under this suspense she determined to wait the event, before she communicated the mournful information to her absent family. Mr. B. and his daughter arrived fafe at their destined place, and the former having fatisfaftorily concluded his en gagement, they proceeded in the com pany of a young lady, whose father had complimented them with apartments in liis house, to the mod popular places of public entertainment.
