Lord Grenville, his Majch ty’s principal Secretary of State lor Foie ten Allans. b Head-quarters of his Royal Highness the Archduke l Charles, Rell, near Wurtz burgi, Sept 4, 5 79 6. My Lord, Your lordlhip is acquainted with the unfor tunate circumkanc.es which have obliged Col. ane Mr. R. Craufurd, to remain lor a lon . time at adiltancc from the feene of operations. the abfcnce of these gentlemen at a moment !° P ar ticularly interfiling as the present, mull j * r f> re ttcd, as a loss to the public icrvicc , which, though at their requek, 1 now’ attempt to detail to your lordlhip L he late proceed mss of tnearrny. I led inyfcli inadequate to lup ply. 1 Your lordlhip is already informed ofth. movements ot his royal highness the arch dug” up to the 31k ult. at which period the in h. wing of the army was aifembled in the plain betwixt Forchiemand Bamberg ; and the left, conhtting of upwards of twenty battalions and litiy Iquadroms, under the command of Lieu tenant General Stzary, had reached Eberach : : and threatened at om.e, by detachments, the ! points of Schweinfurt and of WurlzbuVgh. , Early on the 31k, the Archduke entered Bain berg ; and, from the information there received ol the enemy, determined.to puflr on with the whole army towards Warfzburg, as being the point on the occupation ol which*depended the poflibility of forcing Jourdan to abandon the Mein, and take his retreat through the coun try of Fulda, on the Lahn. His Royal Hi Vi ncis proceeded in the evening to Botirg Ebe rach. General Kray took poll at Eltmann, and General Stzary advanced to Kloiter Schwart zach. , Chi the tft of September, the Archduke marched to Ober Schw'artzach. General Gray to Geroldlholfcn, and General Stzary l o Kilim s’ n i wheie ho palled the Mem; Ins advanced guard, under General Hoize, took poffeifion ot the town of \\ urtzbuigh, the garnlou retir ing into the citadel. In the mean time the enemy drained every ■erve to reach Wurtzburgh, before the main body of die Auilnan army flvould come up ; and by forced marches, arrived ‘at Ko.ruacn, 1 within three leagues of the town, the fame day on which General Home took polfellion of u. Next day, (the 2d) J rurdan attacked, wkh the utinoil impetuofny, the corps und'-r General Stzary ; but though he lucceeded in forcing lome ol the polls-,* he was not able to make any itnpivAioii'otf the mam poiitidn, and retir ed in the evening, to his camp'near Kornach. I here he relolved to abide the event, of battle; and in that view, poked himfelf in the follow ing manner : \ llis right wing to the Mein, a little below M uitzburg, rdb'doii a very com manding emi nence ; in trontof which a’ deep river rendered the accels extremely difiicult. The fivft line, ot his centre occupied a long narrow woods, Ikirtmg the bottom of a chain ol heights, oti the ridge of which his fecund line was polled. His left wing confilling, almok entirely Os cav airy, was placed in the fpaefous plain in front ot Korn2ch ; but considerably thrown- back, in order to receive the more effcttual lupport Irom the infantry in the wood. A numerous artillery was attributed on the moft elfcntial points along his front. The di ydion ot Letevrc, remained poked behind Schwein urt, to cover the great road - of Fulda, and a imali intermediate corps maintained his communication with the army. His Royal Highness halted the scl in his camp ol Ober Schwartzah : whilst a bridge was thrown on the Mein, near Dettelbach, which was not fimihed till late 111 the evening. Gen. Kray remained at Geroltzhoiien. Gen. Stzary, in the mean time, judging, lrom the force and ufuai conduit of Jourdan, that he would loon renew his efforts to ren der himfelf maker of Wurtfburgh, unbraced the fpmled relolution of rather advancing again it him, thanof wailing for him in his po (ition. Ihe Archduke approved of this idea, and determined to facilitate the e.'ieaution of it, by making a combined attack on the enemy, to uki place ear y in the morning of the 3d. Ihe intention was, that Gen. Stzary should move to him ; that the main body, under the command of Gen. Waru-nileben, pacing the ‘ bridge at Dettlebach, fliould.attack the centrc ’ of the enemy ; whilk Gen. Kray, crolling ike river at the pointneareft Geroltzhoiien, Ihould turn his left wing. Soon after day-break, accordingly, General ■ Stzary advanced, and drove back the polls ot the enemy; as however, the other two columns had a confiderablc march to make, and met i with much unexpended delay in the palfage of i the river, he loon found himfelf engaged alone bvvery superior number; and was not only obliged to rclinquifh the ground he had gained, but had much difficulty in maintaining hisori ’ ginal pofitibn; At this critical ink ant, his Royal Highness feat ordprs to Gen. Wartenflebcn, to ford the river with the whole ol his cavalry, and ad vance dire&ly againil the left of the enemy. — , This judicious manoeuvre had the deiired el feci. jourdan feeing himfelf menaced in the moll cirential point ot his position, withdrew from his right the troops with which he was pressing Gen. Stzary, who thus gained time to re-ellablifh himfelf in his poll. •The cavalry now charged the left of theene .™v, and drove it from its ground ; but the enemy retiring behind the wood, the Auilri , ans remained cxpoled to .a hre of niufquetry and grape, which obliged them to abandon the advantage they had gained. A lecoud attempt of the fame nature had a (imilar fate ; and al ter Iruitlefs endeavours to draw the enemy in to the plain, his Royal highnels relolved to await the arrival oi Gcu. Wartcnflebeu’s co lumn, without which it was evident the pofi • tion ot the enemy could not be forced. At length the infantry appeared advancing from Dettlebach ; and Gen. Stzary moving forward **t the fame time, a combined attack was immediately formed ?pa which covered the enemy’s front V’ u'i talions ol grenadiers advanced for this ba ,-’ with equal order and invpetuofitv 2 f,°r ol the (warm of Tirailleurs w'u f* artJiel * then ; they gained the wood withou T?®’'’* shot, and m a lew minutes drove the c!!" 8 * “'>t only from thence, but trom th. i! beyond ,t. WURTZBURG, Sept. 3. On the 2d towards noon general Gre nier arrived with his division from Arn ftein, and towards 4 o’clpck in the af ternoon one of the hottest engage n- its commenced which lasted tiil iare in the night but was not decisive. Genera?. Jourdan, vvho had been all along in the neighbourhood of Swinefurth, Arrived in the night with his vv.toie army, and towards morning arch’duke Charles like wile with Soo men, cavalry. With break of day the battle began in -the neighbourhood of this city, with unex ampled obftir.acy ; long was our fate in fulpence ; at lad, at 4 o’clock in the af ternoon, we heard, that the Auftrian* had obtained the victory. Soon after general Hotze made hisen try into this city and was received with loud acclamations : the dead of the French la)’ in heaps : 4000 are laid to* No. 74.
