SONNET TO MEMORY.
Alt, Mem’ry ! kind deceiver, flatter still,
Again bring back the rosy-winged hours,
When; on the flow’ry mead, or “ cloud capt
hill,”
Hope, Truth and Friendship shed their Tooth
ing pow’rs.
All, no, delusive cheat 1 away, away,
“ Phantoms of bliss, 011 ! quit my aching
fight,”
And let not Recolleftiou’s lightening ray
Break the dark gloom of Apathy’s dull night.
Mem’ry ! thou art the gricf-ftruck wretch’s
banc,
Painting in rainbow lints fweetpleafurc’s pafl
Wfien present Misery’s hard galling chain,
(Too hard to bear) may ever, ever last :
Thus, thus deceitful breaks life’s April-day,
Smiles like falfe friends, and flatters to betray!
ELVIRA.
FRAGMENT—From the Greek.
WEAK is the vanity that boasts of riches,
For they are fleeting things; were they not such,
Could they be your’s to all fuccceding time,
’Twere wile to let none share in the polTdlion.
Rut if whate’er you have is held of fortune,
And not of right inherent, why, my father,
Why, with such niggard jealousy, engross
“What the next hour may ravilh from yourgrafp,
And cast into fome favorite’s lap ?
Snatch the fwift occafioft while ’tis your’s;
l’ut this unflable boon to noble uses;
Foster the wants of men—impart your wealth
Anti purchase friends ; ’twill be more lading
treasure,
And, when misfortune comes.your best rcfource.
A MORAL TALK.
f Continued from No. 71 .)
THE ortentation of a fafhionable life
had much influence on Amelia, who be
gan so cherish a partiality for pleasures
at which she could only be entitled to
glance. The limplicity of her former
amusements began to appear dull and in
iipid; and (he prevailed on her father to
protract his departure much longer than
he had originally proposed ; Mr. B. in
ihe mean time, little fufpeded that his
daughters mind was alternately agitated
with her duty to her parents, and her
love for a specious gallant, whose eves
having encountered those of the lair
Amelia, at the Theatre; she blulhingly
received the itnpreffion, and by her evi
dent confefion difeovered the innocence
of her heart. This adventurer soon
found out the place of her refldence, and
having acquired favorable intimations
of her family and connections, he imme
diately urged his suit by the clandestine
conveyance of a letter, full of the inoft
ardent protelfions of the fervour of his
palfion, and representing himfelf as the
ion of a gentleman of extend ve fortune
in the county of D . He pointed
out the means for procuring an inter
view ; in an hour of infatuation (he cort
fented to meet him,and was accordingly
entangled. Va-lcom her lover, urged
Amelia to elope from the eye of a father,
who could not bcexpe&ed to close with
propofols of so important a nature, with
out (ach explanation as might probably
prove fatal to their loves.
Ah then, ye fair !
Be greatly cautious of your Aiding hearts :
Dare not th’ infectious sigh; the pleading look,
Down call and low, in meek fubmiflion drefs’d,
But lull o( guile.— Thompson.
