ODE to INNOCENCE.
THE lovely infant lull'd to rest,
Reposing on the mother’s breast ;
Ur waking with an artless fmilc,
Her cares and troubles to beguile ;
Or fixt in sweet unconfcioua gaze,
While each new object it surveys,
H irmlefa is, without olienee,
Pure angelic innocence.
T re eyperienre prompts the mind,
Or hiflrlon’s lervilcculloms bind,
While youthful hope thebveaft infpiresj
And nature’s fuddrn impulse fires ;
While novelty fiill charms each fcnlc —
Then, uyluJpefting innocence,
Roams on fancy’s airy wing,
Sportive o’er the fiow’ry spring.
lint far from cities, far from camps,
Midst lonely glens and rural haunts,
At mountain’s top, or secret glade,
Where no temptations e’er invade ;
In humble cot, by rulticcells,
There the charming fair one dwell* {
Simple, b'-autiful and wild,
Put est nature’s lovely child.
Near the woods, where echo rings
At the fountain’s crystal springs,
On the hill at earlielt morn,
While limped pearls the grass adorn ;
Or, where the rocks flupeudous rile,
Behold the youth without disguise!
Free from guilt, and free from wealth,
Enjoying peace ancl blooming health.
Here contentment forms her bowers, *
While frnoothly glide the fleeting hour*,
H re r.oo the lonfe-rob’d Graces reign,
\V r i.h love and laughter in their train :
Ancl liiduilry, and Virtue fair,
And Temperance, with che,;rial air,
Here enjoy calm peace by day,
And fwcctly deep the night away.
