PAPER. —A POEM.
Extracted from the Works of the late Dr. BxWJa-
UIH FRANKLIN.
iOME wit of old—such wit* of old there
were—
Whole hint* (bew’d meaning whose illusions
CJre.
fiv one brave ftrokc to mark all human kind,
Call’d clear blank paper ev’ry infant mind ;
When Hill, as opening fenf'e, her dictates
wrote,
Fair virtue put a fcal, or vice a blot,
The thought was happy, pertinent and true;
Mcihinks a genious might the plan purlue,
I, (can you pardon my preemption) I
No wit, no genius, yet lor once will try.
Various the papers various wants produce,
The wants of lafhion elegance and use,
Men are it various, and it right 1 scan,
Each fort of Paper represents iome Man.
Pray note the Fot>~ Half powder and half lace,
Nice, as a band-box w-rehis dwelling place :
He’s the gitipaper which apart you store,
And lock from vulgar hands in the feritoire,
Mechanics, servants, farmers, and so forth,
Are copy paper of inferior worth ;
Lets priced, more ufeful, for you t delk de
creed,
Tree to all pens, and prompt at every need.
Th- wfet h whttn avarice bids to pinch and
Ipare,
Starve, cheat and pilfer, to enrich an heir,
Is cohrfe Crown paper, luch as pedlers chufe,
To wrap up var'‘s, which better men will use.
T*<te next, the miser’s contrail, who destroys
Health, fame and fortune, in a round of joys :
Will any paper match him ? Yes, throughout,
He's a true finkin% paper, pad all doubt.
The retail politician's anxious thought
Dec it*} this fide always right, and that Hark
nought ;
He foams with censure, with applause he
haves—.
A ditoe t: rumors and a tool of knaves ;
He’ll want no type his weakness to proclaim,
While such a thing as Jools-cap has a name.
TANARUS! • hally gentleman, whole blood runs high,
V > > pick* a quarrel, if you Hep awry,
V < can't a jest, a hint, or look endure
What’s he ? What ? touch-paper to be sure.
What are otir poets take thifm as they fall,
Good, bad, rich, poor, much read, not read
at all ?
Them and their works in the lame class you’ll ,
find ;
They are the mere waflc-hapcr of mankind.
Oblerve the maiden, innocently sweet,
She’s fair white-paper, an unliillied (heet;
On which the happy mail whom fate ordains,
May write his name, and take her for his pains.
One inllance more, and only one I’ll bring ;
’Tis the great man who (corns a little thing,
Whose thoughts, whose deeds, whole max
ims are his Own,
Form’d on the feelings of his heart alone ;
True genuine royal-paper is his breast ;
Os all the kinds moll precious, purcft, bed.
