ORDERS TO MY PORTER.
(from THt FRENCH.)
THOU faithful guardian of thel'c happy walls,
Whofr honest zeal prote&s thy mailer’s gate,
If any stranger at this manfioh calls,
I’ll tell thee who lhall enter, who fhal! wait.
If fortune, blindfold dame, Ihould chance to
knock,
Or proud Ambition court me to her arms,
4< Shut, Ihut the door, good John,” and turn
the lock,
And hide thy mailer from their fyren charms.
For in their dismal train, as black as night,
Come hideous Care, and Sullen Melancholy,
And Song, and Joy, and Laughter take their
flight,
Nor leave one precious moment to dear Fo
lly;
If at my door a beautious boy he seen,
(His li;tic feet haveoft my threshold trod)
You’ll know the offspring of the Cyprian
Queen,
His air, without the bow, betrays the God.
His magic smiles admiifion always win ;
Tho’ oft deceiv’d, I love the dear dcluder ;
Morn, noon, or night, be lure to let him in,
For welcome Love is never an intruder.
Should sober Wisdom hither ueignto roam,
Nor let her in, nor drive her quite away ;
Tell her, at present, “ lam not at home,
But hope flic’ll viht me another day.”
