Vol. l. >st£WIYORK, December io. This morning, about one o’clock, a moft ireadful Fire broke out near the <en treol Murray’s wharf (Coffee-Boufe flip) which notwithstanding the exer tions of all the engines, and avast con ourfe of the citizens, raged with such fury as to baffle all human Ikill, until all the buildings from thence to the Fly- Market, on the East fide of Front ilreet were consumed to ashes. The progrfcfs of the fire was ir tefiftable. The immenfequantities of pitch, turpentine, and fpiyits, caused the; ilame to rage in an unprecedented man ner. It was arrested in its progress by pulling down the Ftth Market, which flood in the center of the street, at the bottom of Fly-Market. The goods in the (tores firft burnt, were all consumed, with all the- books and papers of the occupiers. Os this number are Mefl'rs. Robinson & Hart f horne, Messrs. Loomis and Tillinghall, W. and S. Robinion, and the reprefen - tatives of Nicholas Cook. The following are the proprietors of the buildings burnt John Jones, 3 (tores ; John Murray, junr. 10 ; Mr. Kip, 4 ; Mr. I. Tlie buildings alone are eilimatcd at about seventy thousand dollars. The (tores were principally filled with various goods, the amount of which cannot be k corredtly afeertained ; but is supposed will not (all fliort of one millmn of dollars. The ware-houses were principally of wood, new, large and commodious. — There was but one brick house. Fortunately it was high water and the wind off shore, by which means the flipping were all saved. We (hall make no remarks on the pro bability of the cause of this truly me lancholy conflagration, except, that it is said to have communicated from the pipe of a dove j nothing certain seems to have been afeertained on this fubjeft. That it has ruined fome, didreffed ma ny, will seriously affeft the whole city, and is irrevocable, are facls too dubbom so be controverted. Our well regulated Jfirc company did feats of valour ; nor fire, nor flame pre vented them from ruffling forward in the midd of danger ; and, remember it ye populous towns, who have unadvi sedly pegletted such important institu tions; had not this city have been bles sed with such an edablidiment, it is more than probable that a great part ol thecity. would havo been reduced to one incendiary pile. Several were hurt at the fire, but we have heard of no lives being 1011. PHILADELPHIA, December 12. We have had an uncommon and con tinued spell of very cold, but generally clear weather, since the 26th of Nov. the night of ifie great fire in this city. The Mercury in Ferenhcit’s thermom eter, was at 130 about sunrising the 23d and 24th of this month—eggs, milk and liqids (which had no spirits) in (mall quantities, were frozen up en tirely, and broke the (hells, bottles with other glass and crockery, which con tained them. An old inhabitant of this State, in forms us, that at the firft settlement of it, a few winters were less severe than this, and often much colder ; that the Altamaha river, near a degree south of this, and where our informant resided, has often been frozen ftxty or seventy yards from its (bores, on each fide, but the greatest part always fell with the tides. %* To make room for the P rest dent's Speech, the Notes in jap port of Mr. Adels official communication, and a number ofAd vertifements are unavoidably omitted un - till 1 uejday. marine ftegtffcr.
