CHARLESTON, February 15.
Extrali of a letter from a young gentle
man on board the United States frigate
John Adams, dated
St. Kitts, 22d January.
We are just arrived at St. Kitts, from
a cruise off Porto Rico.—The day be
fore Chriftmasj oar fccond lieutenant
Mr. Smith, the lieutenant of marines,
purser and a midlhipman, were sent on
lnore, about 29 miles from St. Johns to
buy provifious ; the instant they landed
they were surrounded by Spanish troops
and carried to St. Johns, where they
were put in confinement and treated as
prisoners of war; their not returning
at night, and captain Cross knowing
what a jealous set of people the Span
iards are, fuipetted that foinething ot the
fort had happened ; —he waited until
the next day and then run down for St.
Johns; lieutenant Flagg and a miJ
lhipman were sent on Ihore to demand
the prisoners of the governor; they
■were detained one hour at ths Mora
Caifie, and then an 1 officer was sent to
coaler with the lieutenants, who com
manded an audience ol the governor, but
ws refufed, upon which he lent word
to the governor, that he (houitl return
in the morning, and if he was then re
fufed an audience , that they should im
mediately return to America and make
a for naf complaint to our government,
of which, 1 suppose the governor being
fearful, not only gave an audiawee the
next day, but invited them both to
dine with him and set the prisoners at
liberty in the evening—all except Mr.
Smith wlio refufed to leave his prison
until the boat and every thing which
was taken froth him were returned into
bis hands, which being done, the next
and ty, all things were fettled amicably,—
A few days after we took a prize and
then left the llation fur St. Kitts, our
cruise being out.
To-morrow we shill fail again on a
cruise to windward of Guadaloupe where
we e<petl to fail in with a French 20
gun ihip which is cruifingoff there.
Captain Truxton isju.t arrived from
Philadelphia in the Conllellation ; there
are now 7 United States vessels in Baf
fetere harbour, three of wluch are fri
gates.
SX VANN AH, February 21.
The Brig Eliza, Pearson, from this
port to Dover and a Marker, was call

The Masonic Brethren.
The citizens in ranks, closed the pro
cession.
While the proceflion was on the move,
minute guns were fired from the Galley
St.’ Mary’s, lying in the river, and ad
the vessels in the harbour had their co
lors half mast. As soon as the proc f
fi in arrived at the grave, the Fodera
Troops opened their rank-,, and leaned
on arms reversed, to let the Masonic
and Citizens pass through, when an O
raiion was delivered by William Gib
foij, wliich be wrote for that occa
sion, as follows:
Brothers and Fellow Citizens,
WF< are now affembied on an awful
occalion, to commemorate the exit of
the Saviour ot his country, and the
friend of Man ; the patron of the
sciences, and encourager of the liberal
arts; who honored masonry by being
one of its moft refpettable members, and
whose greatest ambition was to make
us happy ; tofoothe the rugged paths of
life, and by his example, to animate us
in every laudable purluit. broin his
earliest infancy, fond of atchievements in
the field, especially when the honor of
his country required his attention, his
military flwill exceeded moft Generals
of the age. At the commencement ot
the revolutionary war with Great Bri
tain, with the common consent of his
he headed our armies, de
fended our liberties, conquered our foes,
and secured to us the bleifings of peace :
See him marching at the head ot raw
troops, undisciplined, meeting with
those who had been born and nurtured
in thcfieldof Mars, and by his indefati
gable industry, and the enthusiasm of
bis 1 soldiers glowing, to revenge the
wrongs their country had sustained;
conquering and fruftrating every effort
used against him. When he had ac
comptilhed that talk, which he confid
etedas a duty he owed his country, he
retired to reap those bleifings he had
well deserved, and which the people,
grateful for bis ditlinguilhed services,
were not lorgetlul ol: Sec him atter
wards Prelident ol his loved country,
distributing justice, and directing the
wheeU of Government, on their just
’Tid almost immutable bias, securing the
fights and propetty of the cituens, by
his virtuous adnv.mftrdtlon, and af the
fame time by his example, encouraging
agriculture, as the source of Indepen
dence, com tie tee and wealth. After
his second reiiremenr, alive to every
spark of genuine virtue, when called
upon to take the field, he willingly
complied with the united wdhes of his
country, and conlidering age and repose,
oniy as trivial things, when compared
to the happiness and welfare of the Pro
file, was willing to lliare our toils
and dangers, conduct us through the
threatning storm, and (tear the veffei
fafe to harbour:—But death, that dc
ftroyerof the human race, accompiifhed
what hostile legions could not do, and
called hun to the Gravel — O view now,
the remains of him who made nations
acknowledge our power, and monarchs
tremble on tile throne—view now the
adoration of the people, a lifelefs corps :
Oil death! if it were polfible to arraign
thee—why have thy (halts been levelled
here, but thy unrelenting hand takes
ail—Weep ye lovers of your country,
a tear is manly ; revere forever him
who led you to conquest, whose equal
has not been, or ever will be—Serene
alike in death, as well as life, a foul as
clear of guilt, as the frailty ot our na
ture will admit, resigned to every turn
ot fortune and of fate, meeting death
with fmi! i-, which none but hearts as
pure as 1.i,, could do. Then rest re
vered more than mortal, the choice!!
bleifings of a grateful country will for
ever follow thee ; will make known to
posterity, there lived a Wafhir.gton, one
of the greatest gifts of heaven— protec
tor of the widow and the orphan —the
wonder of the world, whose virtues
merited their warmest praise, and whose
enlightened foul, scorned every a£t of
baseness.
Forever sacred be his Tomb , and may
that God, in whom through every dif
ficulty he placed his hope, take his de
parted spirit to the celeltial mansions
of the blessed, where he will meet the
accomplilhment of that happiness, we
are ail so eargely in pursuit of, and in
which our sanguine hopes are centered ;
and may we, in complying as nearly as
we can with his example, condutt our
feives in such a manner in this life, as
to gain the esteem of those around us,
and when the hour of dissolution (hail
come, to confider it only as a wilhed
for change, from anxious care, to per
fect happiness.
Immediately after this, the Federal
Troops advanced to the grave, fired
three vollies, and marched away to their
piace of parade, and the rest of the pro
cession to their refpettive homes, with
forrowful hearts, for the loss of that tru
ly great man.
