S 7 R,
From whar you have said in this pi
per of the nth, in answer to mine of
the 7th, it is hardly worth my wnib
to fay any more to yon, as the reader
can eaSly perceive, that the object o’
your statement of the 2 jut u't. of monies
received and paid by you on account of
the poor, was not (o much to (hew, the
balance of the poor fund, as to bring
into public view three great officers,
It ourlelfas overseer of the overseer ot th
j:.oor; (an office that I never knew, ex
ittel but in the judges of the inferior
court and city council, in behalf ot the
citizens;) Mr. R.. B >lton as overfeeroi
the poor, and Mr. John Gibbons, the
naan out of three men, that had beer
tax colleflot , which paid the moft mo
ire v to the poor fund; these are ufetul
offices to be fore; but (ir, when you
exalt yourfelf and friends, you ought
to do jultice to your neighbors. It is
true Mr. Gibbons has paid more money
to you, i,r the poor, titan either of his
twolaft predeceflbrs in office, but when
tvs recoiled, that the order for levy ol
county monies for the year 1798, was
oijie fourth of the general returns of
the county, and it had never before
been mure then one lixtii, and taking
into icw (your extraordinary exertions,
as receiver ot returns,) we naturally
conclude that Mr. Gibbons ought to
pay to the poor fund, one thoafand dol
lar?, with as if.■ h ease, and without
being out ot .be lino of his duty, as
many of hi? predecdTors three hundred j
your logic is home what lingular, you
acknowledge you received ot me, up to
the 10th May 170S, 864 dollars 6t]
cents, county money', when c!ek of
tne inferior court, yet when you come
to make u statement cf the poor fund,
you could not credit me but for part of
ii; becaufc no more came into your hands.
I ifuppofe you mean as overseer general.
Then if juftus H. Schenber, overseer
general, received fromjuftus H. Scheu
ber, clerk inferior court, 289 dollars
cents, how could he with propriety cre
dit P. Miliedge tor it ? —ls you could
with part, you could with the whole.
(But your object was to make me ap
pear as contemptible as poffibic.) I al
waysexps&edjtlut whenever I saw an ac
count of the poor fund, come out under
your hand, it would have commenced
from the time you entered into office, as
clerk of inferior court, and ended wuea
you went out. The account you have
lately exhibited, would have come pro
perly’from the present overseer of the
poor, he could have Hated it in 6or 8
lines, without {lander on any one. bat fir,
you have been guilty ot a glaring
impropriety, for nliich in future, I llialt
treat you as I do all the rest of iny ene
mies, with silent contempt.
Yours,
P. MILLEDGE.
