IMrOR I'ANT JUDICIAL DFCLSIONS.
Several very important decisions were
announced on the opening of the Supreme
Court yesterday morning ; amongst which
was one, in the case of the brig Julia and
fbip Aurora, American velfols detained by
private armed vessels of the United States
since the war, for being found under Bri
tish Licence, which condemns all proper
ty protedied by an enemy’s licence during
the war.—ln another case also (the Priva
teer Jefferson vs. the Rapid and Cargo) of
a veflcl sailing to the port of the enemy
for the purpose of bringing away the pro
perty of American citizens, the sentence
of condemnation of velTel and cargo was
confirmed. The opinion of the Court on
these cases was, we believe, unanimous.
The above decisions, which put the axe
to the root of a very extcnlive fraudulent
• traffic with the enemy, cannot fail to be
acceptable as well to the fair and honed
merchant, as to all the friends of the war
throughout the U. States.— Nat- Intel.
The brave Col. Johmsos, who command
ed the M .united Regiment at the defeat of
Prn&or, and was then so severely wpund
’ ed, arrived in this City yesterday, and took
his seat as a Representative from Kentucky.
Although he received several wounds in va
rious parts of his body, it gives us great
pleasure to date that his general heaith is
perfectly re-ellablished, and he has the hap
py prospect of entirely recovering the use
of his left arm and hand, which were much
fluttered.— lbid.
FIRE.
We learn with great pain, that the
dwelling-house of Capt. R. W. Vandkr
hohst, on Srewee, was destroyed by fire
on the night of the Bth instant. The fire
commenced at 12 o’clock in the cellar un
der the hall, and so rapid was its progress,
that the captain and his family narrowly
efc.iped with their lives, not saving the least
article, not even the clothes they had ta
ken off when they went to bed. The
house, a very large building, was totally
confirmed in about an hour.—Captain V’s.
loss in furniture, papers, and other valua
bles, and the mansion, is luppofed to be
nearly 30,000 dollars.
It “is a providential circumflance, that
capt. Morrison, a neighbor, slept at the
house that night, in a lower apartment,
near where the fire commenced, and dif
r.overed it time enough to give the alarm
to the family, otherwise the whole nmft
have perilhed.— Charleston Times.
