MG HI Y IXTFRFM tSG COM MU XU AT/OX.
Coos County, Feb. i£, 1814.
The public sensibility ‘3 greatlv excit
ed in this quarter, in consequence of outra
ges recently committed on ieveral citizens
by a military company Rationed at Stew
artllown. The following may be relied
on as truth.
On the 10th of January la ft, a Mr. Bis
fell. was, without any precept, or colour of
authority, arrtfted by a sergeant Bunker,
under the orders of a Capt. Hodgdon,
commanding the aforefaid company, and
impriloned in the Block honle ; after con
fining him as long as they thought proper,
he was difmifled without trial or l'atis
faftiou for the detention. On the remon
llrance of a refpeftable citizen to. the said
Hodg lon against l’uch proceedings, Hodg
don observed that he was adding under tbe
authority of tbe United States, and that
he ftiould continue to arrest all iuch persons
as said or did any thing difrelpefttul to the
Army or the Laws.
Since the above, a Mr. Hanson has been
arrtfted in the fame manner, and although
no charge has been exhibited against him,
he remains a prisoner in the Fort.
Emboldened by the forbearance of the
citizens, and in purfiianre of a system,
which, unless speedily relifted, will ren
der the military powei paramount to the
civil, this fame Capt. Hodgdon on the Bth
inst. ordered a young man by the name of
Cooper to be seized and arrtfted in the
(lore of his uncle with whom he lived in
Canaan, Vermont ; he was then placed
under guard, and the next day taken to
the aforefaid Block-house as a prisoner,
where he now remains. The uncle ap
plied to Capt. Hodgdon to know the cause
of the arrest and detention of his nephew ;
Hodgdon replied that he should not tell
him any cause ot his arrest or detention ;
that he had him in the Guard-houle and
Jhould fend him to Burlington, and would
not fufFer him nor any other person to fee
or speak with him. Some of the officers
tauntingly observed that they were pre
paring ha'nd-cuffs and irons toconfine fuel)
prisoners.
Again—On the i4thinftant, the fame
sergeant Bunker, arrested a person by the
n wne of Hall, in the employ of Mr. Tho
mas Eames, and carried him to the Fort,
where he is still confined. On Mr. Fames’
demanding Bunker’s authority, he said he
had no precept, that his orders were ver
bal from the Captain to take him dead or
alive. The above are fads which can be
duly substantiated. Measures are now
taken bv the civil process to liberate the
persons on whom this daring outrage has
been committed.
AMERICANS ! Once a recital like
tbe foregoing would have needed no com
ment your jealoufv did not Humber
when your rights were in jeopardy—-your
sensibility was routed at the bare men
tion of {landing armies. The insults and
outrages of a British soldier in Boston
dwelt on vour.imagination, and animated
every son of Liberty to a prompt and
manly oppolition against everv attempt to
render the civil power subordinate to the
military.— The arrest of a citizen by .
military force was like eleftricitv to the
system, and the puniflunent of him by
martial law swelled vour hearts, and nerv
ed vour arms to rest fiance.
t*F.()Pi ,E OF NEW-ENGLAND, re
fled ferioutlv on t !, e foregoing—mark the
rapid advances of a military despotism,
conlider that the above recited outrages
have been committed bv an officer of the
United States army, having only a Angle
company under his command—Are you
aware that every tiling Republican is be
coming unfaftiionable at Walliington ?
That Yankee ideas of equal rights and uu
fliackled commerce, and that remonflrances
ag daft oppressive and unequal burthens are
disregarded ? Do you not perceive the
progrels of a system, which, if not im
mediately checked, will lay your Repub
licanil’m in the dull ?—you fee what tress
paftVs on your rights a Angle company of
l’oldiers have dared to commit, it thcl’e
things art done in the green tree, what will
be done in the dry ? (five the President
a Handing army of 63.000 men and 100,
• 000 militia with power to appoint the of
ficers, and then go Inquire for your liberties
at the tomb of the Capulets.

came through, was in a (late of confufi on
and alarm. It is also dated, by a gentle
man from Huron, that a cannonading was
heard there, in the direction of Detroit, on
1 uefday lad, which commenced yearly in

THE PUBLIC, are refpedlftilly
requelled to suspend their opinion on tlie
various reports against me. relative to inv
agency in the late Imuggling transaction ;
tlie whole affair, so far as I may be con
cerned, or have been charged, will lie lub
niitted to the Diftrift Court, and after its
decilion it then will be time enough to
pour out upon me the epithets with which
I have been so liberally favoured bv R. in
the Republican ; is it fair, is it just, to en
deavor in the way R. has done, to inflame
the public mind when the case is before
the Court, the reiult of which will be to
afeertain the correctness or incorrectness
of R’s epithets ; in the mean time I beg
leave to tell k '. that I abhor treason as
much as he or any other good citizen can
do, and in the day of danger will defend
my country with as much zeal as any man
in it. NOAH B. SISSON.
